OET (OET-LV)And was_given to_me a_rod similar to_a_staff saying:

OET (OET-RV)Then I was given a measuring stick and told, “Go and measure God’s temple and the altar and the people who are worshipping there,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:1–14: The two witnesses

In this section, John saw a new part of this vision. He saw the temple in Jerusalem. Ungodly people controlled the outermost courtyard of the temple.

Then he saw two men who testified about God and Jesus. They were killed, but God caused them to live again and took them to heaven. At that time God caused an earthquake in which seven thousand people died. The rest of the people in Jerusalem then honored God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

God’s two witnesses

Two men told/testified about God and Jesus in Jerusalem

11:1a

Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff and was told,

I was given a measuring rod like a staff: The clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. Probably Jesus gave the rod, because in 11:3a the speaker said that he will give power to his witnesses. For example:

The Lamb gave a reed like a measuring rod to me

I received a reed like a measuring rodIn some languages “take” and “receive” is translated by the same verb. The English verb “receive” implies that someone gave the rod, but the English verb “take” does not imply that. Your translation should imply or indicate that someone gave it.

a measuring rod: The Greek word that the BSB translates as a measuring rod refers to the straight stick or stem of the reed plant. It is a long, straight stemmed plant that often grows by water.

In some languages people are not familiar with reeds. If that is true in your language, you may want to use the name of a straight, thin stemmed plant that is not easily broken. This could be bamboo or some other long straight plant or stick, or a straight tree branch. For example:

a long cane (NJB)

a staff: This refers to a straight stick that is used for measuring distances. It may have been similar to the “measuring rod” in Ezekiel 40:5. That rod was about 3.2 meters (10.5 feet) long.

was told: There is a textual issue in 11:1a: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the word saying (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the words the angel stood saying (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. The clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. Probably Jesus spoke to him here. For example:

he told me

11:1b

“Go and measure the temple of God and the altar,

Go: The Greek word is literally “Rise” (as in the RSV). It indicates that Jesus summoned John to do something. In some languages a literal translation indicates that meaning. For example:

Rise (RSV)

But the context does not indicate that John was sitting and needed to stand up. In some languages a different word must be used to indicate the correct meaning. For example:

Come (NRSV)

Listen

The context implies that in the vision John would go from place to place in order to measure things. So many English versions translate the Greek word as Go.

measure: People measure something to find out how big it is. At that time people measured the size of large things using a rod. A person moved the rod along the edge of an item consecutively from its beginning to its end. The number of times the rod is laid down consecutively is counted.

In some languages the word “count” is used here instead of measure. For example:

count the distance/size

temple: The word temple refers to a building where God, or another deity, is believed to be present in a special way. People worship him there. Here the word refers to the building of worship in Jerusalem. See how you translated this word in 3:12 or 7:15.

altar: On earth, an altar is a platform on which people offer sacrifices or gifts to God. This altar is in front of the earthly temple. A fire burned inside this altar. See how you translated this word in 6:9.

11:1c

and count the number of worshipers there.

and count the number of worshipers there: The Greek words are literally “and the ones worshiping there.” The word “measure” from 11:1b is implied here. Here it indicates the meaning of count.

worshipers: This word refers to people who had come to the temple to honor God.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐδόθη μοι κάλαμος ὅμοιος ῥάβδῳ λέγων

˓was˒_given (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐδόθη μοί κάλαμος ὅμοιος ῥάβδῳ λέγων Ἔγειρε καί μέτρησον τόν ναόν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί τό θυσιαστήριον καί τούς προσκυνοῦντας ἐν αὐτῷ)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the context suggests that it was Jesus, since the same person speaks of “my two witnesses” in verse 3. Alternate translation: [Jesus gave me a reed like a measuring rod and said]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

κάλαμος ὅμοιος ῥάβδῳ

˓a˒_rod similar ˱to˲_˓a˒_staff

The point of this comparison is that this reed was long and straight and John could use it to mark off distances as he could with a measuring rod. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [a reed that was long and straight so that I could use it to mark off distances, as I could with a measuring rod]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:1 The instructions to measure the Temple are reminiscent of Ezekiel’s visions (see Ezek 40–42; 43:13-17). The Jerusalem Temple was destroyed by the Romans in AD 70; these details symbolize God’s precise knowledge of and care for his people who belong to him (cp. Rev 7:2-4; Zech 2:1-5).
