OET (OET-LV)eldresses as mothers, younger as sisters, in all purity.

OET (OET-RV)female elders as mothers and younger ones as sisters in all purity.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–6:2: Paul told Timothy how to treat different groups of believers

Paragraph 5:1–2

Paul told Timothy to treat all believers as if they were members of his family.

5:2a

older women as mothers,

Again there is no verb in this part of the verse. If you need to supply a verb, you should probably use the same verb as you used in 5:1c.

older women as mothers: Paul wanted Timothy to treat older women in a way that showed that he respected and loved them. In other words, he wanted Timothy to speak to such women as though they were his own mother.

5:2b

and younger women as sisters,

As in 5:1c and 5:2a, there is no verb in this part of the verse. If you need to supply a verb, you should probably use the same verb as you used in 5:1c.

younger women as sisters: To treat a younger woman as a sister meant to honor and protect her.

5:2c

with absolute purity.

with absolute purity: In this context the phrase that the BSB translates as with absolute purity means that Timothy was to avoid any sort of sexual sin when dealing with older or younger women. This included his thoughts and intentions toward these people as well as his actions.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

πρεσβυτέρας & νεωτέρας

eldresses & younger

Paul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the previous verse if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and exhort older women … and exhort younger women]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πρεσβυτέρας & νεωτέρας

eldresses & younger

Here Paul could be implying that these women are older or younger: (1) than Timothy. Alternate translation: [women older than you … women younger than you] (2) in general terms. In this case, Paul is using the words older and younger to refer to general categories. Alternate translation: [elderly women … young women]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς μητέρας & ὡς ἀδελφὰς

as mothers & as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πρεσβυτέρας ὡς μητέρας νεωτέρας ὡς ἀδελφάς ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνείᾳ)

Paul wants Timothy to exhort older women as he would speak to his own mother, and he wants Timothy to exhort younger women as he would speak to his own younger sisters. He means that Timothy should speak to these people as if they filled the roles of mother and sisters in his own family. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state that more explicitly. Alternate translation: [as you would respectfully exhort your own mother … as you would exhort your own sisters]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὡς ἀδελφὰς, ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνίᾳ

as as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πρεσβυτέρας ὡς μητέρας νεωτέρας ὡς ἀδελφάς ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνείᾳ)

Here, the phrase in all purity could describe: (1) only how Timothy should exhort younger women. In this case, Paul is especially concerned about sexual purity. Alternate translation: [in all sexual purity, as sisters] (2) how Timothy should exhort older and younger men and older and younger women. In this case, Paul is speaking about purity in general. Alternate translation: [as sisters, exhorting all those people in all purity]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνίᾳ

in all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πρεσβυτέρας ὡς μητέρας νεωτέρας ὡς ἀδελφάς ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνείᾳ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of purity, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [in a very pure way]
