Ecclesiastes 5 Introduction

Structure and Formatting

This chapter moves from instructions on reverent conduct before God, including cautious speech and faithful oath (vv. 1-7), through observations on corruption and the futility of wealth (vv. 8-17), to a commendation of simple enjoyment as God’s gift (vv. 18-20).

In verses 4-6, the Teacher warns against making a oath to God and failing to fulfill it. The “messenger” in verse 6 likely refers to a priest or temple official who would collect the promised sacrifice.
