MSG(4-6)All who indulge in a sinful life are dangerously lawless, for sin is a major disruption of God’s order. Surely you know that Christ showed up in order to get rid of sin. There is no sin in him, and sin is not part of his program. No one who lives deeply in Christ makes a practice of sin. None of those who do practice sin have taken a good look at Christ. They’ve got him all backward.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:4-10 This section discusses what it means to live a pure life (3:3). Being born into God’s family demands purification; a life of sin—a continual lack of purity—is evidence that someone is not really God’s child. Sin is incompatible with the new nature derived from the new birth. John wants believers to do what is right and thus demonstrate that they are joined to Christ and his righteousness. Those who are children of God do not make a practice of sinning, but this differs from the sort of “sinlessness” that the false teachers claimed (see 1:5-10 and corresponding study notes).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐκεῖνος & ἄρῃ & αὐτῷ

that_‹one› & ˱he˲_/may/_take_away & him

The pronouns that one, he, and him refer to Jesus in this verse. Consider whether it might be helpful to your readers or more natural in your language to use the name “Jesus” in one or more of these instances.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐκεῖνος ἐφανερώθη

that_‹one› /was/_revealed

See the discussion of the term “appear” in Part 3 of the Introduction to 1 John. Here the term seems to have an active meaning. Alternate translation: “Jesus came to earth”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἁμαρτία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν

sin in him not is

John speaks of sin as if it were an object that could be inside of Jesus, although he is emphasizing that sin is not in Jesus. Alternate translation: “Jesus has never sinned”
