Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

ULT (for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),
UST After all, if anyone does not know how he should lead and care for the people who live in his own house, he certainly cannot care for the gathering of God’s people!

MSG (1-7)If anyone wants to provide leadership in the church, good! But there are preconditions: A leader must be well-thought-of, committed to his wife, cool and collected, accessible, and hospitable. He must know what he’s talking about, not be overfond of wine, not pushy but gentle, not thin-skinned, not money-hungry. He must handle his own affairs well, attentive to his own children and having their respect. For if someone is unable to handle his own affairs, how can he take care of God’s church? He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up. Outsiders must think well of him, or else the Devil will figure out a way to lure him into his trap.

3:1-13 The topic shifts to church leadership by elders (3:1-7) and deacons (3:8-13). Timothy’s role in the appointments is less clear than that of Titus (see 5:17-22; Titus 1:5), possibly because the church in Ephesus was more mature and thus better able to manage the process (cp. Acts 6:2-6). The criteria listed here pertain to character rather than function and are partly a response to the local heretics. Reading this letter in the churches would make the criteria public and demonstrate the unfitness of the heretics for leadership.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases
δέ
but
Here, the word but introduces an explanation about why Paul included the requirement that overseers lead their own families well. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces an explanation, or you could leave but untranslated. Alternate translation: “I include that because,” or “indeed,”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo
εἰ & τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς
if & someone ˱of˲_his own house /to/_lead not /has/_known how
Here Paul uses an imaginary situation to show that people who do not lead their own households well are not able to lead the church well. Use a natural method in your language for introducing an imaginary situation. Alternate translation: “suppose that someone does not know how to lead his own household well. In that case, how”
προστῆναι
/to/_lead
Alternate translations: “to manage” or “to take care of”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται?
how ˱of˲_/the/_assembly ˱of˲_God ˱he˲_/will_be/_taking_care
Paul is using the question form to strongly deny that this kind of person can take care of the church of God. If you would not use the question form for this purpose in your language, you could translate this as a statement or an exclamation. Alternate translation: “he will not take care of the church of God well.” or “he will certainly not be able to take care of the church of God!”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ
˱of˲_/the/_assembly ˱of˲_God
Here Paul refers to the specific church whom the person would be taking care of. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “the church of God in his charge” or “the church of God to which he is assigned”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ
˱of˲_/the/_assembly ˱of˲_God
Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe a church that worships and belongs to God. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: “the church that worships God”
