TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:9 The depiction of divine or angelic winged creatures as women is unusual in the Old Testament. If the two women are the Lord’s servants, they are unique angels. If they are the attendants of Wickedness (a foreign goddess), their submission to God’s command demonstrates his power over false gods.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) I lifted my eyes

(Some words not found in UHB: and,lifted_up eyes,my and,saw and=see/lo/see! two women/wives coming_forward and=spirit in/on/at/with,wings,their and,had,they wings like,wings the,stork and,lifted_up DOM the,basket between the=earth/land and=between the=heavens )

Here the word “eyes” represents the person who sees. Alternate translation: “I looked up”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) wind was in their wings

(Some words not found in UHB: and,lifted_up eyes,my and,saw and=see/lo/see! two women/wives coming_forward and=spirit in/on/at/with,wings,their and,had,they wings like,wings the,stork and,lifted_up DOM the,basket between the=earth/land and=between the=heavens )

This idiom means that they were flying. Alternate translation: “they were flying”

(Occurrence 0) they had wings like a stork’s wings

(Some words not found in UHB: and,lifted_up eyes,my and,saw and=see/lo/see! two women/wives coming_forward and=spirit in/on/at/with,wings,their and,had,they wings like,wings the,stork and,lifted_up DOM the,basket between the=earth/land and=between the=heavens )

A stork is a type of large bird that has a wingspan of two to four meters. Zechariah compares the size of the women’s wings with the size of the stork’s wings.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

(Occurrence 0) They lifted up the basket between earth and heaven

(Some words not found in UHB: and,lifted_up eyes,my and,saw and=see/lo/see! two women/wives coming_forward and=spirit in/on/at/with,wings,their and,had,they wings like,wings the,stork and,lifted_up DOM the,basket between the=earth/land and=between the=heavens )

The words “earth” and “heaven” form a merism that refer to the sky. It is implicit that the two women flew away with the basket. Alternate translation: “They lifted the basket up into the sky and flew away”
