OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said to_me do_not fear Oh_Dāniyyʼēl if/because from the_day (the)_first which you_gave DOM heart_of_your to_understand and_to_humble_yourself to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before god_of_your words/messages_of_your they_were_heard and_I I_have_come on_words/messages_of_your.

OET (OET-RV)and he told me, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel, because your prayer was heard from the very first day that you started investigating these matters. You humbled yourself before your god, so I’ve come in response to your words.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 10:12–14

The man in the vision encouraged Daniel not to be afraid. He told him that God had heard his prayers. He himself had come to help Daniel understand what would happen to his people in the future.

10:12a

“Do not be afraid, Daniel,” he said,

“Do not be afraid, Daniel” he said: The BSB places the words he said in the middle of what the man said to Daniel. This is good English style. However, in some languages, it may be necessary to place these words at the beginning of 10:12a, as they are in the Hebrew text. For example:

Then he continues, “Do not be afraid, Daniel…” (NIV)

Place the words he said wherever they are most natural in your language.

Do not be afraid, Daniel: In some languages it may be natural to place the address before the command:

Daniel, do not be afraid.

Daniel, you do not need to be afraid.

he said: This phrase is literally “And/Then he said to me.” This phrase introduces what the man in linen said to Daniel.

10:12b

“for from the first day that you purposed to understand

for: This verse part and the following verse part give the reason why Daniel need not be afraid. The Hebrew introduces this reason with a conjunction that the BSB translates as for. Some translations leave the connection implied

from the first day that you purposed to understand: The phrase the first day probably refers to the beginning of the fast mentioned in 10:2. This was three weeks before. At that time Daniel had “set his mind to gain understanding.” Here is another way to translate this:

from the very first day that you applied your mind to understand (NET)

you purposed to understand: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as purposed to understand is literally “gave your heart.” It means to concentrate on something. Use the expression that is natural in your language. It is best to leave implied what Daniel wanted to understand, or to supply a general expression. For example:

dedicated yourself to understanding things

10:12c

and to humble yourself before your God,

and to humble yourself before your God: This is a second thing that Daniel had set his mind to do. It refers to fasting and praying to God, as described in 10:2–3. In some languages it may be natural to say:

and make yourself low/small before God

General Comment on 10:12b–c

Daniel humbled himself and prayed to God for understanding. This refers to different aspects of the same action. So in some languages it may be natural to combine 10:12c and 10:12b. For example:

since the first day you humbly asked for understanding (CEV)

10:12d

your words were heard,

your words were heard: This is a passive clause and there are at least two ways to translate it:

Use the verb form that is most natural in your languages in this context.

General Comment on 10:12b–d

In some languages it may be natural to reorder these verse parts. For example:

dGod has heard everything that you said cever since the first day you decided to humble yourself in front of your God bso that you could learn to understand things. (GW)

dGod has heard your prayers cever since the first day you decided to humble yourself bin order to gain understanding. (GNT)

10:12e

and I have come in response to them.

and I have come in response to them: In some languages it may be natural to translate this as a separate sentence. For example:

I have come in response to your words. (NET)

I have come in response to your prayer. (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

נָתַ֧תָּ אֶֽת־לִבְּךָ֛ לְהָבִ֧ין

set DOM heart_of,your to,understand

Alternate translation: “you determined to understand the vision”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

נִשְׁמְע֣וּ דְבָרֶ֑יךָ

heard words_of,your

This can be expressed in active form. Alternate translation: “God heard your words”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
