In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 10:15–17

Daniel was in so much awe of the man in linen that he was unable to respond to him. He just looked down in silence.

10:16a

And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips,

And suddenly: The Hebrew text introduces this verse part with a word that calls attention to what follows. Older English translations often translate this as “behold.” The BSB translates this word as suddenly. You should focus attention on what happens next in a way that is natural in your language.

one with the likeness of a man touched my lips: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as one with the likeness of a man is more literally “as the likeness of the sons of man.” This phrase probably refers back to the man dressed in linen, the same one who was speaking in verses 11 and 12–14. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

the one who looked like a man touched my lips (NLT)

the one who appeared to be a man touched my lips (NET)

one in human form touched my lips (NRSV)

10:16b

and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me,

and I opened my mouth: The Hebrew idiom that the BSB translates literally as I opened my mouth refers to the fact that Daniel was able to speak again and did so. In many languages it may not be necessary or natural to translate this phrase explicitly. See the General Comment on 10:16b–c following 10:16c.

and said to the one standing before me: In Hebrew this phrase is literally “and I spoke and I said to the one standing before me.” The BSB has combined the two verbs “I spoke” and “I said” into one verb (said). This verse part continues to introduce what Daniel said when he was able to.

General Comment on 10:16b

The three verb phrase “opened my mouth,” “began to speak,” and “said” all refer to the same action. In some languages it may be natural to combine them. For example:

10:16c–d

My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish, and I have no strength: Daniel told the angelic figure that he was as weak and helpless as a woman in childbirth. He had no strength and he was overcome with anguish. There are several ways to connect the clauses. For example:

My lord, because of the vision such anguish has come upon me that I have no strength.

Sir, I am completely overwhelmed by the vision. I have no strength left.

Sir, the vision has been such a shock to me that I feel numb/paralyzed/stunned

10:16c

“My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish,

My lord: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as My lord is used to express great respect. Translate it in a way that is natural in your language for addressing someone of high status. For example:

Sir (REB)

Master (NCV)

because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as I am overcome with anguish is literally “my pains/pangs have overpowered me.” This same expression is used of a woman in childbirth overwhelmed by the strength of her birth pains. See also Isaiah 13:8 and 21:3. The physical feeling is used here as a metaphor for feeling emotionally overwhelmed. In some languages there will be an idiom that it may be natural to use here. Here are some other ways to translate this:

at this vision anguish has gripped me (REB)

because of this vision, pain has overwhelmed me (GW)

this vision has brought me great distress

10:16d

and I have no strength.

and I have no strength: The Hebrew text is literally “and I have not kept/retained strength.” The context makes it clear that Daniel was weak especially in the sense that he did not have the strength to speak well. He felt unable to talk with the great figure who had touched him. Other ways to translate this include:

and I’m helpless (GW)

so that I have no strength left to talk to you

This may refer to the one who had just spoken to Daniel. However, some versions interpret it as referring to a different person. Alternate translation: “one who looked like a human touched”
