Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 10:9–11

The man in the vision spoke to Daniel. He helped and encouraged him to stand up and listen to the message from God.

10:9a

I heard the sound of his words,

I heard the sound of his words: The Hebrew is more literally “And I heard the sound of his words,” as in the BSB. This means that Daniel heard the man in linen say something. Daniel does not record what the man said or if he understood him. Translate this in a way that is natural in your language. For example:

Then I heard the man speak (NLT)

10:9b

and as I listened,

and as I listened: The Hebrew repeats the phrase from the previous verse part, saying “and when I heard the sound of his words” (RSV). In some languages it may be natural to avoid such repetition. For example:

and when I heard the sound of his voice (NLT)

General Comment on 10:9a–b

Since there is repetition in 9a–b, in some languages it may be natural to combine them. For example:

9a–bWhen I heard his voice (GNT)

10:9c

I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground.

I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as I fell into a deep sleep is more literally “I was dazed/stunned.” This verse part indicates that Daniel lay on the ground senseless or unconscious. He was dazed or stunned by the voice of the man in the vision. See also 8:18b.

The Hebrew text does not make it clear whether Daniel fell to the ground at this point, or whether he was already on the ground after losing his strength in the previous verse, 10:8. Try to leave this open. Here are some other ways to translate this:

I fell into a trance, face to the ground. (NRSV)

I lay there unconscious, face downward.

I fell into a trance-like sleep with my face to the ground. (NET)

I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground (NLT)

Possible meanings are: (1) Daniel was so scared by what he saw that he deliberately laid on the ground, where he then fainted or (2) Daniel fainted and then fell forward onto the ground.
