OET (OET-LV) And_I I_was_left_behind I_alone and_I_saw DOM the_vision the_big/large/great(fs) (the)_this and_not it_remained in_me strength and_vigor_of_my it_was_changed on_me into_destruction and_not I_retained strength.
OET (OET-RV) so I was left alone and saw this incredible vision. My strength deserted me and my face went deathly pale, and I couldn’t move.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
Daniel described his reaction to the vision. He also described what the people with him did at this time.
So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision.
So I was left by myself and I gazed at this great vision.
They left me alone, and I was the only one to see this amazing/wonderful sight.
So I was the only person left to watch this wonderful vision.
So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision: The common Hebrew conjunction that the BSB translates as So here introduces what happened when and because Daniel’s companions ran away. Only he was left. He gazed at the vision alone. Here are some other ways to translate this:
So I was left there all alone to see this amazing vision (NLT)
I alone was left to see this great vision (NET)
No strength remained in me;
I had no more strength.
I became weak.
What I saw caused me to lose all my strength.
No strength remained in me: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as No strength remained in me is more literally “and strength did not remain in me.” It means that Daniel became very weak. Here are some other ways to translate this:
no strength was left in me (NASB)
My strength left me (NLT)
I felt very weak
I became weak (CEV)
my face grew deathly pale,
My face changed color so that it was like the color of a dead person
My face turned deathly pale
I became white like a person who is about to die.
my face grew deathly pale: The Hebrew clause is more literally “my splendor was turned into corruption/destruction.” This probably means that Daniel’s normal healthy appearance changed, and he became as pale as a dead person. See the notes on 7:28c and 5:6a. Here are some other ways to translate this:
my natural color turned to a deathly pallor (NASB)
my face turned deathly pale (NIV)
I became as white as a dead person
and I was powerless.
and I felt extremely weak.
and I became helpless.
I was completely exhausted.
and I was powerless: The Hebrew more literally says “and I kept/retained no strength.” This has a very similar meaning to 10:8b. Use an expression that is natural in your language. For example:
I had no strength
and I felt very weak (NLT)
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
וַאֲנִי֙ נִשְׁאַ֣רְתִּי לְבַדִּ֔י
and,I left I,,alone
Daniel is stating the pronoun I separately, even though the verb translated as was left already includes this meaning. He is doing that to emphasize that he alone remained to see the vision. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. Alternate translation: [And I myself was left alone] or [And I myself was left entirely alone]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
נִשְׁאַ֣רְתִּי לְבַדִּ֔י
left I,,alone
The expression was left is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [And I remained alone]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהוֹדִ֗י נֶהְפַּ֤ךְ עָלַי֙ לְמַשְׁחִ֔ית
and,vigor_of,my grew on,me into,destruction
Daniel is speaking of his appearance changing as if it was turned into something else. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and my healthy appearance became deathly pale]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
