SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:4–7:16: The people persisted in their sins

In this section, the LORD again spoke to the people of Israel and Judah. In contrast to the people’s future repentance (6:1–3), he gave examples of their current disloyalty and corruption, including their reliance on other nations instead of him. They continued to commit sins, and they refused to seek him. He announced that he would judge them, and he illustrated his coming judgment in various ways.

In this section, the Hebrew text sometimes uses second person pronouns (“you”) and sometimes third person pronouns (“they” or “he”) to refer to the people of Israel. The BSB follows the Hebrew pronoun usage. It uses “they” in 6:5–10, “you” in 6:4 & 11, and “they” or “he” in 7:1–16. Throughout these verses the LORD is the speaker, and he either addresses the people directly or speaks about them.

English versions all use “you” in 6:11 and “they” in chapter 7, but they differ in the way they use the pronouns in 6:5–10. You should use the most natural and least confusing way in your language to handle the pronouns in 6:5–10. In 6:7–10, the Display will follow the BSB pronoun choice in the first meaning line and give another pronoun choice in the second meaning line. See the note on “you” in 2:16b–c, where the pronoun changes are similar.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

Transitory Faithfulness and Imminent Judgment (NET)

Impenitence of Israel and Judah (NRSV)

Paragraph 6:7–7:2

In this paragraph, the LORD gave examples of how the people of Israel had failed to know him and had failed to show love to him and others.

7:2a–b

This verse continues the description of the deceitful people. Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

2aBut they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil.

2bNow their deeds are all around them; they are always before My face.

The first clauses in 7:2a and 7:2b indicate that the people are unaware of the true results of their sins. The second clauses indicate that the LORD knows about all their sins and remembers them.

7:2a

But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil.

But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil: In Hebrew, 7:2a begins with a conjunction that connects the people’s wickedness in 7:1d–f and their failure to realize the true situation in 7:2a–b. The preceding context describes people who live deceitfully as if the LORD did not care. But the true situation in 7:2a–b is that God does indeed care.

Here are some ways to indicate this relationship:

Use a natural way in your language to indicate this relationship.

they fail to consider: This phrase means “they are unaware” or “they do not think about.”

that I remember: In this context, these words mean “I notice” or “I think about,” or “I don’t forget.” They indicate that the LORD knows about their evil deeds. They are not hidden from him.

Here are some other ways to translate these words:

I have seen (CEV)

I am watching (NLT)

all their evil: This phrase refers to actions that are against God’s will, such as dishonest or immoral behavior.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

all the evil things they’ve done (GW)

all their wickedness (NRSV)

7:2b

Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.

Now their deeds are all around them: This is a figure of speech (personification). It describes the people’s evil deeds as enemy soldiers who have surrounded and captured them.Hubbard (pages 131–132) and McComiskey (page 101). This figure of speech may imply two things:

  1. They have many sins.

  2. The people cannot free themselves from their sin and its consequences.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

Now: This conjunction may indicate a time reference or introduce a contrast. For example:

Their evil deeds have now surrounded them (NET)

It never enters their heads that I will remember all this evil; but their sins surround them (GNT)

In some languages, it may be more natural to allow the context to imply the relationship between this clause and the previous one and not have a conjunction here. For example:

Its people don’t realize I am watching them. Their sinful deeds are all around them (NLT)

Any of these options are acceptable. Use a natural way in your language to indicate one of these relationships.

they are before My face: This clause is parallel to the clause “I remember all their evil” in 7:2a. The meaning is related. God always sees every evil deed the people do, and he does not forget them.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

they are right in front of me (NCV)

I see them all (NLT)

their own deeds…stare me in the face (NJB)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) their deeds surround them

(Some words not found in UHB: and,not consider to,heart_of,their all/each/any/every evil_of,their remember now they,have_surrounded_them deeds_of,their before face_of,my they_were )

The people’s evil deeds are probably spoken of here as if they were other people ready to accuse them of their crimes.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) they are before my face

(Some words not found in UHB: and,not consider to,heart_of,their all/each/any/every evil_of,their remember now they,have_surrounded_them deeds_of,their before face_of,my they_were )

Here God is represented by his “face” which emphasizes his presence and awareness. Alternate translation: “and I see it all”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-2 I want to heal Israel: God’s overwhelming desire was to heal Israel’s harlotry (see 14:4) and restore her to right relationship with him, but she was filled with liars, thieves, and bandits.
• The Israelites might have thought that the Lord was unaware of their sins, but he was watching them, and he saw everything they did.
