OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּמִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֥ לֹא־ תִתֵּ֖ן לְהַעֲבִ֣יר לַמֹּ֑לֶךְ

and,any_of,offspring_of,your not give to,sacrifice to_the,Molech

The phrase to pass over to Molech refers to burning a child in the fire as a sacrifice to the idol Molech. Alternate translation: [You must not burn your children alive for Molech]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְלֹ֧א תְחַלֵּ֛ל אֶת־ שֵׁ֥ם אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ

and=not profane DOM name_of God_of,your

Here the word profane means to dishonor. The word namerepresents God himself. Alternate translation: [And you must not dishonor your God]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:21 Molech was the national god of the Ammonites (1 Kgs 11:7). This god was later worshiped by Israel during times of apostasy (2 Kgs 23:10; Jer 32:35). Molech probably appears in this list because Molech worship was associated with sexual sins; it seems to have included child sacrifice as well.
• To bring shame on (literally blaspheme, profane) the name of your God meant using the name of the Lord as though it were not holy, such as in a false oath (Lev 19:12) or in the worship of a false god (Ezek 20:39).
