Section 2:12–18: Believers should obey God so that they show other people how God wants people to behave

Paul reminded the Philippian believers that when they obeyed God as Jesus did (2:6–8), God would help them to give the gospel to those in spiritual darkness. As long as they were faithful, Paul knew that his work and even his suffering would not be in vain.

Paragraph 2:17–18

Even though Paul’s work caused him to suffer, he was rejoicing and so should the Philippians.

2:18

So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

you too should be glad and rejoice with me: Paul was asking the Philippians to rejoice about what had happened (and was happening) to them. He was also asking them to share his joy about what was happening to him. Even though he was suffering and knew that he might soon die, he still wanted them to rejoice with him. The two verbs Paul used in 2:18 (glad, rejoice) are the same ones he used in 2:17b. If it is possible, you should use the same words here in your translation as you used in 2:17b.

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τό Δέ αὐτό καί ὑμεῖς χαίρετε καί συγχαίρετε μοί)

The phrase in the same manner refers to the Philippian Christians rejoicing in the same manner that Paul said he would rejoice in previous verse [2:17](../02/17.md). If this would be unclear in your language, consider stating this explicitly. Alternate translation: [in the same way that I rejoice]

The phrases you also rejoice and rejoice with me are both commands or instructions given to all of the Philippian Christians. Use the most natural form in your language to give direction to a group of people. Alternate translation: [I urge each of you to rejoice, and also to rejoice with me]
