Paul reminded the Philippian believers that when they obeyed God as Jesus did (2:6–8), God would help them to give the gospel to those in spiritual darkness. As long as they were faithful, Paul knew that his work and even his suffering would not be in vain.
Theme: Believers should be different from those who are evil and should show people the message of life.
Do everything without complaining or arguing,
¶ Everything you do, do without complaining or arguing with each other,
¶ Don’t grumble or quarrel with other people in whatever you do
complaining or arguing: This means for a person to say bad things about his own situation and to argue with other people. Perhaps some of the Philippians were acting like this toward God or toward one another. Paul was probably thinking about the attitude of the Israelites while Moses led them through the desert (Exodus 16:2).
In some languages 2:14 has been translated as:
Live without complaining or arguing.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular
πάντα ποιεῖτε χωρὶς γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Παντᾶ ποιεῖτε χωρίς γογγυσμῶν καί διαλογισμῶν)
The phrase Do all things without is a command or instruction to all of the Philippian Christians. Use the most natural form in your language to give direction to a group of people. Alternate translation: [Every one of you, make sure that you do not complain or argue in anything you do]
2:14 Complaining and arguing arise from self-centeredness (see 1 Cor 10:10; 1 Pet 4:9; Jude 1:16), whereas believers are called to sacrificial love (Phil 2:4).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
