UST This is what Yahweh has declared regarding the people of Edom:
 ⇔ “I will not change my mind about punishing the people of Edom because of the many sins that they have committed;
⇔ I will not change my mind about punishing them,
 ⇔ because they pursued the people of Israel, who descended from Esau’s brother Jacob, and killed them with swords;

⇔ They pursued their relatives with the sword,
 ⇔ stilled their pity,
 ⇔ cherished their anger continually,

WEB Yahweh says:
⇔ “For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four,

And for four, I do not reverse it,
Because of his pursuing his brother with a sword,
And he has destroyed his mercies,

FBV This is what the Lord says: The people of Edom have repeatedly sinned and so I will not hesitate to punish them, for they hunted down the Israelites to whom they were related,[fn] killing them with swords. They attacked without mercy, tearing the Israelites to pieces in an angry rage that never stopped.

1:11 The Edomites were descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob.

T4T Yahweh also said this to me:

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:11 Edom was another betrayer (see 1:9; Gen 36; see also Gen 25:23-30; 27:39-40).
• The NLT adds the Israelites to make explicit what relatives (literally brother) means (see Gen 25:25-30). “Brothers” can also refer to parties to a treaty (see Amos 1:9). Apparently Edom exerted constant pressure on the borders of Israel and Judah, raiding and plundering at moments of weakness (Jer 49:7-22; Obad 1:1-9).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) For three sins of … even for four

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

This is a poetic device. It does not mean that a specific number of sins had been committed, but indicates that many sins had led to God’s judgment. See how you translated these words in Amos 1:3.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) Edom

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

Here “Edom” represents the people of the country of Edom. Alternate translation: “the people of Edom”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

(Occurrence 0) I will not turn away punishment

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

Yahweh uses two negatives here to emphasize that he would punish them. See how you translated these words in Amos 1:3.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) he pursued his brother

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

The assumed knowledge is that Esau, from whom the people of Edom were descended, was the brother of Jacob, from whom the people of Israel were descended. Alternate translation: “he pursued the people of Israel”

(Occurrence 0) cast off all pity

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

Alternate translation: “showed them no mercy”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) His anger raged continually, and his wrath lasted forever

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

These two phrases mean the same thing and are repeated to emphasize his continued anger. Alternate translation: “He was continually angry and always furious”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

(Occurrence 0) his wrath lasted forever

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in three transgressions ʼₑdōm and,for four not revoke,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in pursued,he in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman and,stifled compassion,his and,tore to,continuance anger,his and,rage,his kept,her forever )

This is an exaggeration that is meant to express the ongoing nature of his wrath.
