Section 6:1–11: Believers must not take fellow believers to court before unbelieving judges

In this section Paul discussed another problem in the church in Corinth. At least one of the believers had taken another believer to a pagan/civil court to settle a dispute. Paul told the Corinthian believers that this was unwise and harmful to the church. He taught them what they as believers should do if another believer wronged them.

Paragraph 6:1–6

In this paragraph Paul told the Corinthian believers how foolish they were to take disputes among themselves to be settled before unbelievers. He gave them some reasons why they should not have unbelievers judge between them. Paul used sarcasm and rhetorical questions to show the Corinthians how serious the situation in their church was. He wanted them to feel ashamed of themselves. They should settle disputes between believers themselves.

6:2–3

In verses 2 and 3, Paul gave two reasons why Christians should not ask unbelievers to judge disputes between Christians. The reason given in verse 2 is that the Christians are going to judge the world. In verse 3 the reason is that the Christians will judge the angels.

6:2a

Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?

Have you forgotten that God’s people will one day judge the people of this world?
Remember that those who belong to God are going to judge this world.
For you know that some day we^(incl), God’s holy people, will be judges over the people of this world.

Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?: This is a rhetorical question. Paul used it to remind the Corinthians of something they had already heard from Paul or other Christian teachers. He was also using the rhetorical question to rebuke the Corinthians by implying that they should have remembered this teaching. There are two ways to translate this question:

as a rhetorical question. For example:
Don’t you know that God’s people will judge the world? (CEV)
as a statement. For example:
Surely you know that God’s people will judge the world. (NCV)

the saints will judge the world: This is the reason why a believer should not take another believer to a public court. Paul was probably referring to the final judgment. God’s people, those who belong to Christ, will share with Christ the work of judging the world.

the world: It is likely that the phrase the world here refers to all human beings, including people who do not know God.See, for example, Daniel 7:22; Matthew 19:28 and Luke 22:29–30; Matthew 20:21–23; 2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 20:4–6.

And: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as And here introduces the conclusion Paul made from what he had just said. Here is another way to translate this:

Well, then,… (GNT)

if you are to judge the world: Paul assumed that this condition was true. This was going to happen. So in some languages it may be more natural to translate this as:

since you are to judge the world

In some languages it may not be natural to repeat the phrase judge the world here. In those languages you may be able to say something like:

since this is true

you are to judge the world: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as you are to judge the world is in the passive: “the world is to be judged by you.” You may translate this using either a passive or an active verb, whichever is the more natural in your language here.

6:2c

are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

are you not able now to judge/decide your small disagreements?
you should certainly know how to settle/resolve your own various little problems/arguments.
when you have small disagreements/arguments among yourselves, you should be able to make peace.

are you not competent to judge trivial cases?: This is a rhetorical question. Paul was making a strong statement that implied a rebuke. He wanted the Corinthians to realize how foolish they were to ask others to settle their disagreements. They should be able to settle their own problems. There are two ways to translate this verse part:

as a rhetorical question. For example:
Are you not competent to settle trivial suits? (NET)
as a statement. For example:
you can surely judge everyday matters (similar to the CEV)

are you not competent…?: The Greek word that the BSB translates as competent means “capable” or “able.” So other ways to translate this phase include:

aren’t you capable…? (GNT)

are you not able…? (NCV)

Don’t you know how…?

trivial cases: The Greek word that the BSB translates as trivial cases means “unimportant problems” or “very little lawsuits.” The arguments the Corinthians were having were about very insignificant things compared to the judging work that God’s people will do in the future.

Alternate translation: [because the world is judged by you]

The present tense does not mean that the saints are currently passing final judgment and will not do so in the future. Rather, Paul uses the present tense to state a general fact about the saints. The judgment itself will occur in the future. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the present tense of is judged with the future tense here. Alternate translation: [will be judged]

Here, to be unworthy of something means that one is not capable of doing that thing or is not qualified to do it.
