OET (OET-LV)Or not you_all_have_known that the holy ones the world will_be_judging?
And if by you_all is_being_judged the world, unworthy you_all_are of_the_courts of_the_least?

OET (OET-RV)Don’t you realise that in the future, believers will judge the world, and if the world’s going to be judged by all of you, surely you’re competent enough now to judge smaller cases?

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

or

The word Or introduces an alternate to what Paul speaks about in 6:1. The Corinthians currently think that going to court in public is fine. Paul gives the true alternative: they will judge the world and thus should not need to take their quarrels and lawsuits anywhere else. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express Or with a word that signifies a contrast or gives an alternative. Alternate translation: “Rather,” or “On the other hand,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἅγιοι τὸν κόσμον κρινοῦσιν?

or not ˱you_all˲_/have/_known that the holy_‹ones› the world /will_be/_judging

Paul does not ask this question because he is looking for information. Rather, he asks it to involve the Corinthians in what he is arguing. The question assumes that the answer is “yes.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this question with a strong affirmation. Alternate translation: “You already know that the saints will judge the world.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

ἀνάξιοί ἐστε κριτηρίων ἐλαχίστων?

unworthy ˱you_all˲_are ˱of˲_/the/_courts ˱of˲_/the/_least

Paul does not ask this question because he is looking for information. Rather, he asks it to involve the Corinthians in what he is arguing. The question assumes that the answer is “no.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this question with a strong negative or positive statement. Alternate translation: “you are definitely not unworthy of the smallest cases” or “you are definitely worthy of the smallest cases”

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-condition-fact

εἰ ἐν ὑμῖν κρίνεται ὁ κόσμος

if by you_all /is_being/_judged the world

Paul is speaking as if the world is judged by you was a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it is actually true. If your language does not state something as a condition if it is certain or true, and if your readers might think that what Paul is saying is not certain, then you could translate his words as an affirmative statement. Alternate translation: “because the world is judged by you”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐν ὑμῖν κρίνεται ὁ κόσμος

by you_all /is_being/_judged the world

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on the world, which is judged, rather than you, who do the “judging.” Alternate translation: “you judge the world”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

κρίνεται

/is_being/_judged

Here, is judged makes a general statement about what you, that is, the saints, do. The present tense does not mean that the saints are currently passing final judgment and will not do so in the future. Rather, Paul uses the present tense to state a general fact about the saints. The judgment itself will occur in the future. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the present tense of is judged with the future tense here. Alternate translation: “will be judged”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀνάξιοί & κριτηρίων ἐλαχίστων

unworthy & ˱of˲_/the/_courts ˱of˲_/the/_least

Here, to be unworthy of something means that one is not capable of doing that thing or is not qualified to do it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express unworthy of with a comparable idiom or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: “unqualified concerning the smallest cases” “not able to judge the smallest cases”

Note 8 topic: translate-unknown

κριτηρίων ἐλαχίστων

˱of˲_/the/_courts ˱of˲_/the/_least

Here, cases could refer to: (1) legal disputes that are resolved in a court of law. Alternate translation: “of the smallest legal disputes” (2) the court of law that decides the legal dispute. Alternate translation: “of the lowest courts of law”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:1-11 When serious differences arise between two Christians, they are not to be settled by a secular court, but by other believers.
