Section 6:1–11: Believers must not take fellow believers to court before unbelieving judges

In this section Paul discussed another problem in the church in Corinth. At least one of the believers had taken another believer to a pagan/civil court to settle a dispute. Paul told the Corinthian believers that this was unwise and harmful to the church. He taught them what they as believers should do if another believer wronged them.

Paragraph 6:7–8

In 6:7–8 Paul rebuked the Corinthian believers even more strongly. When a Christian opposed another Christian in court, they were both doing something wrong. In verse 7 Paul rebuked any believer who took his fellow believer to court for doing wrong to him. Then in verse 8, Paul rebuked to any believer who had done wrong to his Christian brother.

Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong,

But some of you have done wrong and taken things from others—
But it is some of your group/church who have done wrong and taken/stolen something from others.

Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong: Paul now began to talk mostly to those who did the wrong to their fellow believers.Here Paul shifts from talking about the ones wronged to talking to the wrongdoers who commit the initial wrongs. We can tell this because of two things: First, Paul uses a strong contrast connector alla “but, however.” Here it means: “but on the other hand.” In the second place, he changes from passive forms of the verbs (“you are wronged…you are cheated”) in 6:7b-c to active forms of the same verbs (“you do wrong and you cheat”) in 6:8a. It is as if he turns to talk to the wrongdoer. The BSB translation gives the impression that Paul is talking here to the same person as in 6:7. But the change from passive to active verb forms does not allow that. The word you is emphasized in the Greek sentence. The BSB has shown this by supplying the word yourselves. Another way to show this emphasis is by following the REB:

But instead, it is you who are wronging and defrauding. (REB)

The BSB has reversed the order of the Greek verbs meaning cheat and do wrong. You should translate them in the order that is most natural in your language.

even against your own brothers!

yes, even from other Christians/believers!
And the people you wronged are your fellow believers!

even against your own brothers!: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as even against your own brothers is literally “and this to brothers.” Paul was saying that some of the Corinthians believers were cheating and wronging their fellow believers. You should supply as much of this information as is natural in your language. The NIV is an example of a translation that supplies a verb here:

Here, But introduces a contrast with what Paul wants them to do, which is to “be wronged” and “cheated” rather than take a fellow believer to court. Here Paul says that they do the exact opposite. Rather than “be wronged” and “cheated,” they actually wrong and cheat fellow believers. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this connection with a phrase that clarifies what Paul is contrasting. Alternate translation: [But instead of being wronged and cheated,]
