12:1-17 Satan (pictured as a dragon) plots to challenge God’s purposes but is thwarted. Having failed in direct confrontation with God and Christ, he attempts to attack God’s people. Three brief scenes present an overview of the story (12:1-6), followed by elaborations of the war in heaven (12:7-9) and the war on earth (12:13-17).
In this section, John saw several signs or symbols representing spiritual reality. The first sign was a woman, representing the people of God. The second sign was a dragon, representing Satan. The woman was about to give birth, and the dragon wanted to kill the child. The child is symbolic of Jesus as the Christ. God took the son to heaven and protected the woman.
In 12:7–12, John interrupted the story of the woman and the dragon to tell about the war between the dragon and the angels. These verses help explain why the dragon wanted to kill the woman. In 12:13, John continued the story of the woman and the dragon.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
The sign of the dragon chasing the woman
The vision of the woman and the dragon
The spiritual conflict of God’s people and Satan
They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb
They defeated him through the sacrifice of the blood of the Lamb
Our(incl) fellow believers conquered him by the Lamb’s sacrificial death on the cross
They: The pronoun They refers to believers (12:10d) here.
conquered: This word means “triumphed” or “obtained victory.” Here it refers to having success over Satan in all the ways he tried to defeat them. Other ways to translate this word are:
overcame (NIV)
have defeated (NLT)
by the blood of the Lamb: This phrase refers figuratively to the death of Jesus. Jesus’ death was a sacrifice that makes believers pure before God.
In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate a different meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:
Explain the meaning in your translation. For example:
by the blood of the Lamb through his death
by the blood of the Lamb by his sacrifice on the cross
Translate the meaning without the figure of speech. For example:
through the blood sacrifice of the Lamb
by the Lamb’s sacrificial death on the cross
Translate literally and explain its meaning in a footnote. For example:
This phrase refers figuratively to the death of Jesus. Jesus died as a sacrifice to make believers pure before God.
Lamb: This word refers to a young sheep. Here, it is used as a title for Jesus. Many English versions capitalize the word Lamb here to indicate it is used as a title. See how you translated this word in 5:6 or 7:17.
and by the word of their testimony.
and through the witness/testimony they told others.
and by their words of witnessing/testifying.
by the word of their testimony: There are several ways to interpret the Greek phrase. The main interpretations are:
It means by the word to which they testified. They testified about the gospel of Jesus. For example:
by the word to which they bore witness (NJB) (GNT, NJB, CEV, NCV)
It means by the word that consists of their testimony. They testified and their own words are important here. For example:
by the witness they bore (REB) (NLT, REB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Beale (page 664) says, “the emphasis lies on Christians testifying to others about their Lord.” However, if a literal translation implies interpretation (1), you may want to translate literally. For example:
by the word of their testimony (RSV)
testimony: The word testimony means “the words spoken about what one saw.” It implies that the spoken words are truthful and accurate. Other ways to translate this word are:
witness (REB)
message about what happened
Some languages translate this meaning using a verb. For example:
speaking about what they know
See how you translated this word in 1:2.
And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death.
Also, they did not love their lives so much that they refused to die for Jesus’ sake.
Indeed, they did not love their lives most, and they were not afraid to die rather than deny/renounce/reject Jesus.
And: This word introduces a further explanation of how the believers overcame Satan. 12:11c describes the third way that believers overcame Satan. For example:
and (NASB)
for (RSV)
Some English versions do not translate this word, but choose to leave the connection with 12:11b implicit. Do what is most natural in your language.
they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death: When unbelievers ordered these believers to deny Jesus, they refused. So the unbelievers killed them. The believers were willing to die rather than be unfaithful to Jesus. Other ways to translate this are:
they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die (NLT)
faced with death they did not cling to life (REB)
they continued to believe even though that lead to their death
they did not love their life most, but rather they held strong to their faith and let themselves be killed
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὸ αἷμα
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί ἐνίκησαν αὐτόν διά τό αἷμα τοῦ Ἀρνίου καί διά τόν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἠγάπησαν τήν ψυχήν αὐτῶν ἄχρι θανάτου)
This could mean: (1) the actual blood that Jesus offered as a sacrifice for sin. In that case, you could use the word for “blood” in your language with literal meaning. (2) the sacrificial death of Jesus by association with the blood that Jesus shed when he died. Alternate translation: [the sacrificial death]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί ἐνίκησαν αὐτόν διά τό αἷμα τοῦ Ἀρνίου καί διά τόν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἠγάπησαν τήν ψυχήν αὐτῶν ἄχρι θανάτου)
The voice is using the term word to indicate that these believers gave their testimony to Jesus by speaking words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the testimony that they spoke]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί ἐνίκησαν αὐτόν διά τό αἷμα τοῦ Ἀρνίου καί διά τόν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἠγάπησαν τήν ψυχήν αὐτῶν ἄχρι θανάτου)
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of word, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [by what they said when they testified to others about Jesus]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
οὐκ ἠγάπησαν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτῶν ἄχρι θανάτου
not ˱they˲_loved (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί ἐνίκησαν αὐτόν διά τό αἷμα τοῦ Ἀρνίου καί διά τόν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν καί οὐκ ἠγάπησαν τήν ψυχήν αὐτῶν ἄχρι θανάτου)
This expression means that these believers did not love their lives so much they would refuse death even if they needed to die in order to remain faithful to Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they did not love their lives so much that they would not die for Jesus]
