Section 8:1–13: Paul answered questions about eating meat that had been offered to idols

In this section Paul wrote about something else the Corinthians had asked him in their earlier letter. They had asked him whether it was acceptable for them to eat the meat of an animal that had been sacrificed to an idol. The primary context for eating such meat was at an idol’s temple. Sometimes an animal would be offered to a false god in connection with a celebration such as a birthday or wedding to seek the god’s blessing and presence at the celebration. The animal would be butchered by a priest and a portion of the meat would be burned on an altar as an offering to the false god. Some of the remaining meat would be returned to the person who offered it and could be eaten together with family or other invited guests at a private banquet room at the temple. (Some of the remaining meat might be sent to the meat market to be sold, a situation that Paul addresses in 10:25–26.)

There were two opinions in the Corinthian church about whether this meat could be eaten by a believer in Christ. Some of the Corinthian believers, including those who wrote the letter, understood that idols were only things that people have made or imagined. They were hoping Paul would agree with them that it was acceptable to eat this meat. However, some other believers thought that it was wrong to enter a temple and eat such meat. They still believed the false gods were real and believed that eating meat offered to them in sacrifice was an act of worship or fellowship with these gods.

Paul agreed in this chapter that the idols worshiped at these temples were not real gods. But he did not give permission to eat this meat at their temple. Doing so might influence other believers to also eat the meat, even though they believed it was wrong. Paul asked the Corinthians believers to act in love toward these brothers rather than selfishly demanding the right to eat this meat.

In chapter 10, Paul will continue to answer the question about eating meat sacrificed to idols. He says that a believer can have no part in the worship of idols and also that demons are active in the sacrifices to idols. He also addresses the separate situations of buying and eating meat sold in the meat market and what to do when someone invites you to eat meat in their home. Before this, in chapter 9, he uses himself as an illustration of the principle he set down at the end of chapter 8 of giving up your rights in love. He had the right to be paid for his work as an apostle, but he gave up his right so that the good news of Jesus would be better accepted.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Paul gave instructions about eating meat of/from animals that had been sacrificed to false gods

Believers should not eat anything that causes other believers to sin

Paragraph 8:4–6

Paul began to write his answer to the Corinthians’ questions about eating food sacrificed to idols. In this paragraph he began by agreeing with them about several things.

8:6a

yet for us there is but one God, the Father,

yet for us there is but one God, the Father: Paul was indicating that believers believe there is only one God, and that he is the only true God. Idol worshipers would have agreed that Christians worshiped their own “god” and their own “lord,” but they would not have agreed that he was “the only God” and “the only Lord.”

yet: The Greek word that the BSB translates as yet indicates the contrast between the idol worshipers who believe in many gods and many lords and the Christians who believe there is one God and one Lord. There are different ways to indicate this contrast. (See the note about “even if” above at 8:5–6.) For example:

for us: The Greek text draws attention to this contrast by moving the words for us to the front of the clause. Consider if it would be helpful to emphasize the words for us in some way in your language.

God, the Father: God, the Father refers to the first person of the Trinity. In this context, it indicates that he is the father of all people because he created all things and all things were made to serve him, as is said in 8:6b-c. In some languages, it is necessary to say who a father is in relation to. For example:

from whom all things came: In Greek, there are no verbs in this verse. This verse part simply says: from whom all things. This means that God is the one who caused everything to exist. Some other ways to translate this are:

who created everything (NLT)

who caused all things to be/begin

all things are from him

he is the source/origin of everything

8:6c

and for whom we exist.

for whom we exist: In Greek, this clause does not have a verb and just says: “and we for him.” This means that “we live/exist in order to serve God.” The pronoun we includes Paul and all other believers.

8:6d

And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ,

there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord is a title meaning “master.” Paul was saying that Jesus Christ is the one who has authority over all believers and even of the whole world.

8:6e

through whom all things came

through whom all things came: Once again in Greek, this clause does not have a verb. It says: through whom all things. The all things here are the same all things as in 8:6b. This means that the universe and everything in it “were created,” “came into existence,” or “began” because of what Jesus Christ did. God the Father is ruler of everything. He gave the task of creating all things to Jesus Christ. In that sense, God the Father created all things through Jesus. Some other ways to translate this are:

God the Father created all things through/by him.

God the Father caused/commanded Jesus to create everything.

8:6f

and through whom we exist.

through whom we exist: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as through whom we exist has no verb. It is literally “we (emphatic) through him.” The BSB has supplied the verb exist. The we means “we believers” or “we who belong to God.” It is not certain if “we exist through him” means that we exist because Jesus created us (physical life) or that we live spiritually because Jesus saved us.Many commentaries interpret this as a reference to spiritual life. For example, Fee says: “the Lord Christ is the divine mediator, through whom God created all things and redeemed us.” However, most English versions translate this as “exist” (physical life) or “live” (neutral). Additionally, the Greek verbless clauses δι᾽ οὗ τὰ πάντα ‘through whom all things’ and καὶ ἡμεῖς δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ‘and we through him’ seem better understood as expressing a similar sense. The same way that all things are through him (= by creation), we are through him. With support for both spiritual life and physical life, we have chosen to recommend translating in way that can include either idea. It is recommended that you translate in a way that could be understood in either sense. For example:

8:4-6 In reality, the idols to which such meat is sacrificed are not gods, for there is only one God (Deut 6:4; cp. Deut 4:35, 39; 10:19-20).
