Section 1:1–21: Daniel and his friends began to serve King Nebuchadnezzar

This section forms the introduction to the first division and to the book of Daniel as a whole. It tells how some Hebrew boys came to live in Babylon and serve the Babylonian king.

God allowed the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, to defeat the king of Judah. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief official to choose some boys from Judah and to train them to work in the government of Babylon. Daniel and his three friends were among these boys. They excelled in their studies and the king was pleased with the wise advice they gave.

The phrase “the Lord delivered” (“Adonay gave” in Hebrew) occurs in 1:2, the phrase “God had granted” (“Elohim had given” in Hebrew) occurs in 1:9, and the phrase “God gave” (“Elohim gave” in Hebrew) occurs in 1:17. (1:2a, 1:9, 1:17a). The author used these phrases to emphasize that the Lord is sovereign over the events of history and the lives of his people. God has authority over what happens to Gentile nations and also what happens to his people. This is the theme of this chapter.

Paragraph 1:15–16

The four young men successfully passed the test. At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his companions looked healthier than the other young men. So they were allowed to continue eating only plant foods and drinking only water.

1:15a

And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished

And at the end of ten days: The phrase ten days refers back to the test period mentioned in 1:14b. Ways to translate this include:

After ten days (GW)

When the time was up (GNT)

At the end of the trial/test period

they looked: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as they looked is passive. There are two ways to translate it:

they: In some languages, it may be natural to be more specific. For example:

Daniel and his three friends (NLT)

healthier and better nourished: In this context these two expressions are very similar in meaning. Daniel and his friends looked stronger and better fed than the young men who ate the king’s food. Some ways to say this in English are:

they looked healthier and stronger (GNT)

they looked healthier and better fed (NCV)

healthier: The Hebrew expression that BSB translates as healthier is based on the general word that means “good.” Another way to translate this is:

better in appearance (RSV)

better nourished: The Hebrew expression that the BSB translates as better nourished is more literally “fatter in flesh,” as in the RSV.Genesis 41:2 uses the same Hebrew expression to describe the cows in Pharaoh’s dream. This does not mean that the young men were overweight. They were in good physical condition and thriving on their vegetarian diet. Use a positive expression indicating a desirable outcome. For example:

better fed (NCV)

stronger (GNT)

gained weightFrCL (1988). In some cultures this would be a negative idea, indicating an undesirable result. It is important to avoid such a suggestion.

1:15b

than all the young men who were eating the king’s food.

than all the young men who were eating the king’s food: This verse part indicates that the other young men looked less healthy and less well-nourished than Daniel and his friends.

than all the young men: See the note on young men in 1:4.

who were eating the king’s food: See the note on king’s food in 1:5. This refers to the same type of food that the king ate, the food the king had ordered that they receive. Other ways to translate this include:

who had been served food from the royal palace (CEV)

who ate the food the king assigned to them

General Comment on 1:15a–b

These verse parts compare the way Daniel and his friends looked to the way the other young men looked. There are various ways of making such a comparison. For example:

Daniel and his friends looked more healthy and well nourished than the young men who had been eating the palace food.

Daniel and his three friends looked very healthy and well fed. The young men who ate the palace food did not.

Here their and they refer to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

וּ⁠בְרִיאֵ֖י בָּשָׂ֑ר

and=fat flesh/meat

This means to have been made healthy from what you have eaten.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:1-21 God fulfilled his prophetic word by sending his rebellious people into exile (see Jer 25:11-12; 29:10). God also extended his grace to a remnant in exile, and he protected and prospered Daniel and three other young Hebrew captives. These young men received the best training of the time in the Babylonian king’s court and were thus well equipped to be God’s witnesses in Babylon. They made the God of Israel known even in exile.
