Section 5:11–6:12: Grow up in your faith, and do not give up

In Section 5:11–6:12 the author interrupted his teaching about God appointing Christ as the high priest in order to tell his listeners to mature in their faith and to warn them not to stop believing in Christ. After this warning (6:4–12), he will continue to teach them in 6:13–7:28 about the priesthood of Jesus and Melchizedek.

Remember to translate the section before choosing a heading for it. Some other possible headings are:

This is what we will do, if God allows us^(incl).
So if God allows/helps us, we^(incl) will study/learn other things that will help us become mature believers.

And: The word And connects “go on to maturity” with “we will do this, if God permits.” In some languages it is more natural to connect these clauses in a different way. For example:

this we will do, if God permits: There is a textual variant here. Most manuscripts have “we will do,” but some old and generally reliable texts have “Let us do.” The difference tends to be more a matter of style of discourse rather than of meaning. The word this refers to leaving behind elementary teaching and going on to maturity (6:1–2). The author intends that he and his listeners will become mature believers who understand what God wants them to know. However, he knows that they can only become mature if God allows it.

In some languages it is necessary to repeat some implied information from 6:1 to make the meaning of the phrase this we will do clear. For example:

So let’s learn the mature/deeper teachings, if God allows us.

Let us go forward! And this is what we will do, if God allows. (GNT)

And we will go on to grown-up teaching if God allows. (NCV)

In some languages it may be more natural to reverse the order of phrases in this verse. For example:

And God permitting, we will do so. (NIV)

if God permits: The phrase if God permits means “if God allows.” In some languages there is a special saying to express this meaning. For example:

The phrase if God permits is a proper way to indicate that God is in control of what will happen. The phrase implies that it is likely that God will “permit” what the author wants to do.
