OET (OET-LV)not according_to the covenant that I_made with_the fathers of_them, in the_day of_having_taken_hold of_me by_the hand of_them, to_lead_out them out_of the_land of_Aiguptos/(Miʦrayim), because they not remained_in in the covenant of_me, and_I neglected of_them, is_saying the_master.

OET (OET-RV)not like the agreement that I made with their ancestors
⇔ when they held my hand for me to lead them out of Egypt,
⇔ because they didn’t stay inside my agreement
⇔ and so I didn’t take any notice of them, says Yahweh.’

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-kinship

τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν

˱with˲_the fathers ˱of˲_them

The phrase their fathers refers to the Israelites who were alive before Jesus lived on earth. The audience of the original quotation was Israelites who descended from these people. Use a word or phrase that refers to ancestors. Alternate translation: [with their ancestors]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μου

in ˓the˒_day ˱of˲_˓having˒_taken_hold in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

The phrase on the day refers to a specific and important time period. It does not necessarily refer to only one period of 24 hours. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that refers to a specific time period. Alternate translation: [during the time when I grasped]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐπιλαβομένου μου τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν, ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου

˱of˲_˓having˒_taken_hold (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

God refers to how he delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. You can read the story in [Exodus 5–14](../exo/05/01.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [when I grasped their hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, where they were enslaved]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐπιλαβομένου μου τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν, ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς

˱of˲_˓having˒_taken_hold (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

God speaks as if he held the hand of all the Israelites and “led them” out of Egypt. The author speaks in this way to emphasize how God took care of the Israelites, just like a parent leads a child by the hand to make sure that the child does not get lost. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [when I picked them up and carried them] or [when I tenderly rescued them]

τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν

˱by˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

The word hand is a singular noun that refers to the “hands” of all the Israelites. It may be more natural in your language to use a plural form. Alternate translation: [their hands] or [each of their hands]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὅτι

because

The word because introduces the reason why the “new covenant” will not be like the old one. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make clearer what because supports. Alternate translation: [the reason for which is that]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

The phrase continue in my covenant refers to doing what the covenant requires. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that refers to keeping the terms of an agreement. Alternate translation: [they did not do what the covenant required]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

κἀγὼ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ κατά τήν διαθήκην ἥν ἐποίησα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιλαβομένου μού τῆς χειρός αὐτῶν ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ὅτι αὐτοί οὐκ ἐνέμειναν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ μού κἀγώ ἠμέλησα αὐτῶν λέγει Κύριος)

The clause I did not care about them refers to how God stopped taking care of the Israelite ancestors. The point is that he did not help or assist them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or use plain language. Alternate translation: [and I stopped helping them] or [I did not assist them]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

λέγει Κύριος

˓is˒_saying ˓the˒_Lord

Here, just as in [8:8](../08/08.md), the author has God speaking about himself in the third person. He uses this form because the quotation uses the third person to speak about God and the author claims that God speaks the quotation. If it would be helpful in your language, you could clarify that God is speaking about himself. Alternate translation: [I, the Lord, say]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:9 God made a covenant with their ancestors at Sinai (Exod 19:1-8; 24:7-8; 34:27-28; Deut 4:13).
• I took them by the hand: In rescuing his people from the land of Egypt, God led them as a parent might lead a child that could not fend for itself (see Exod 12–14).
• They did not remain faithful: See Heb 3:7-19; Num 14:1-38; Deut 9; Ps 106.
• so I turned my back on them: The covenant warned that if the people turned away, God would turn away from them (see Deut 28:15-68; 30:11-20; 1 Kgs 8:22-53; 2 Chr 6:12-42).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
