OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

אֲֽשֶׁר־ יוּצַ֥ק עַל־ רֹאשׁ֣וֹ ׀ שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה֙

which/who poured on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: and,the,priest the,highest among,brothers_of,his which/who poured on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=head oil_of the,anointing and,he_ordained DOM his/its=hand to,wear DOM the,garments DOM his/its=head not dishevel and,clothes_of,his not tear )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [on whose head the priests poured anointing oil]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה֙

oil_of the,anointing

See how you translated this expression in [8:2](../08/02.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וּמִלֵּ֣א אֶת־ יָד֔וֹ לִלְבֹּ֖שׁ אֶת־ הַבְּגָדִ֑ים

(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,priest the,highest among,brothers_of,his which/who poured on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=head oil_of the,anointing and,he_ordained DOM his/its=hand to,wear DOM the,garments DOM his/its=head not dishevel and,clothes_of,his not tear )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [whose hand God filled to wear the clothes]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּמִלֵּ֣א אֶת־ יָד֔וֹ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,the,priest the,highest among,brothers_of,his which/who poured on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=head oil_of the,anointing and,he_ordained DOM his/its=hand to,wear DOM the,garments DOM his/its=head not dishevel and,clothes_of,his not tear )

This expression is an idiom that means to induct someone into the ministry and responsibilities of the priesthood. According to this verse, God has given the high priest the responsibilities of serving and worshiping him. If this would not be clear to your readers, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and to whom I, Yahweh, have given the responsibilities of the priesthood]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶת־ רֹאשׁוֹ֙ לֹ֣א יִפְרָ֔ע וּבְגָדָ֖יו לֹ֥א יִפְרֹֽם

DOM DOM DOM his/its=head not dishevel and,clothes_of,his not tear

Loose hair and torn clothes were signs of mourning. The high priests of Yahweh were not to mourn for their dead relatives in any way that would disrupt their duties of offering Israel’s sacrifices. If it would be helpful to your readers, consider including this information in a footnote or in the text of your translation. Alternate translation: [he must not allow himself to be distracted from his priestly duties by mourning for his dead relatives]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

אֶת־ רֹאשׁוֹ֙ לֹ֣א יִפְרָ֔ע

DOM DOM DOM (Some words not found in UHB: and,the,priest the,highest among,brothers_of,his which/who poured on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=head oil_of the,anointing and,he_ordained DOM his/its=hand to,wear DOM the,garments DOM his/its=head not dishevel and,clothes_of,his not tear )

Here, head represents the hair on the head. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [his hair he shall not let be unbound] or [he shall not let his hair be disheveled]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:10-15 The restrictions made on the common priests (21:1-4) applied even more stringently to the high priest because he had to represent all Israel, including the other priests.
• The priest must never leave his hair uncombed or tear his clothing in mourning, so that he would always be fit to minister. Although the common priest was permitted to marry a widow, the high priest was allowed to marry only a virgin. This made certain that the future high priest and the common priests descended from that union would have an unquestioned lineage (21:15).
