SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:2–9: Paul taught the Philippians how to find peace

Paul asked the believers in Philippi to behave peaceably toward one another. This was important, especially in the context of suffering for their faith. As a way to help them do that, he encouraged them to help one another, to be happy, to pray rather than worry, and to focus on thinking about good things.

Paragraph 4:4–7

This paragraph contrasts with 4:2–3 where Paul talked about arguing. In 4:4–7 he encouraged the Philippian believers to be happy and gentle, to pray and not to worry. He wanted them to experience the peace of God in their hearts and in their Christian community.

4:7a

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

And: 4:7 is the result of 4:6.

the peace of God: This refers to the peace that God gives his people. See note on 1:2. See also peace, section A3c in KBT.

surpasses all understanding: The peace that God gives is much greater than people can ever imagine or understand.

4:7b

will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

will guard your hearts and your minds: When God’s people pray to him and trust and depend on him, he gives them peace, which protects them and helps them not to worry or be afraid.

guard: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as guard is a military term which was used to describe soldiers guarding a city. Paul used it as a metaphor—God’s peace is like a soldier or sentinel which watches over believers and keeps them safe.

your hearts and your minds: The words hearts and minds refer to the inward part of a person. Commentators do not agree on how the two terms are different, but the term “heart” may refer to feelings and the term “mind” to thoughts.

in Christ Jesus: God gives his people this peace because they trust in Christ and belong to him.

ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ Θεοῦ

the peace ¬the ˱of˲_God

Paul is using the possessive form to describe a peace that is characterized by having been given by God. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express it another way. The phrase the peace of God refers to the peace which God gives. Alternate translation: [the peace that God gives]

If your readers not understand the abstract noun peace, you could express the meaning with an adjectival phrase such as “at peace” or in some other way. Alternate translation: [then God will help you be confident in God, even if you don’t understand everything]

The phrase which surpasses all understanding could mean: (1) that the peace God gives is so great that human minds are not able to understand it. Alternate translation: [which is greater than we can understand] (2) that the peace that God gives is superior to anything that humans can contrive through their own efforts. The word guard is a military term which refers to a soldier guarding a city or a fortress in order to protect it from enemy attacks. Here Paul presents God’s peace as if it were a soldier who protects hearts and minds from worrying, and so this phrase literally means “will be like a soldier and guard your hearts and minds” or “will be like a soldier standing guard to protect your hearts and minds.” If your readers would not understand this metaphor in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express Paul’s meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [will keep your hearts and minds safe from attacks of worry and fear] or [will keep your hearts and minds safe] or [will protect your hearts and minds]

OET (OET-RV)Then God’s peace which is above human understanding will guard your hearts and your thinking in Messiah Yeshua.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
