OET (OET-LV) Worthy you_are, the master and the god of_us, to_receive the glory and the honour and the power, because you created the things all, and for the will of_you they_were, and they_were_created.
OET (OET-RV) “You, our God and master, are worthy to receive praise and honour and power,
⇔ because you created everything.
⇔ Everything exists just as you determined to create it.”
In this section, John told more about the vision that he saw, using language similar to 1:10. In his vision he saw in the sky an opening into heaven. He could see God on his throne and different beings worshiping God.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
The vision of the throne in heaven
A vision of God’s throne in heaven (GW)
“Worthy are You, our Lord and God,
“Our(incl) Lord and God, you(sing) are worthy
“Our Lord/Master and God, you indeed deserve
Worthy are You, our Lord and God: In some languages it is more natural to address God first. For example:
Our Lord and God, you are worthy
Worthy are You: The word Worthy indicates that God deserves to receive all glory, and honor, and power. It is right and proper that the elders should give him their respect, honor him, and acknowledge his power and glory. For example:
you deserve (GW)
Worthy: In the Greek, the word Worthy is emphasized. If possible, emphasize it in your language. For example:
Worthy are You (BSB, NASB)
You are indeed worthy
to receive glory and honor and power,
to be glorified and honored and praised for your might,
that everyone should revere you and praise you for your majesty and strength,
to have people/everyone praise your greatness/majesty, show you respect, and acknowledge your power,
to receive glory and honor and power: This phrase refers to anyone praising and honoring God. God accepts that praise and honor. The living creatures, the elders, and others praise God’s glory and power. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
for people/everyone to glorify you and honor you and praise your power
that we acknowledge your majesty and your power and we revere you
that all beings praise your greatness and show you respect and praise you as the powerful/mighty one
receive…power: Here this phrase refers to being praised for one’s power. People praise God for being the all powerful God.
glory and honor: See how you translated glory and honor in 4:9.
for You created all things;
because you made everything,
because you are the creator of everything.
for: This conjunction introduces the basis for saying that God is worthy of praise. Another way to translate this word is:
because (GW)
You created all things: This clause indicates that God made all things in the universe. For example:
you made the whole universe (NJB)
by Your will they exist and came to be.”
and by your decision they were created and by your decision they continue to exist.”
You chose to cause them to exist/live, and you choose to cause them to continue to exist/live.”
In some languages it is more natural to begin a new sentence here. For example:
You chose to create them and they have their existence according to that choice.
by Your will: This phrase indicates that God chose to create all things. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
by your decision (CEV)
as you willed/chose
they exist and came to be: God created all beings and helps them to continue to exist. Other ways to translate these words are:
they were created and continued to exist
they were created and live
you created them, and you cause them to remain/continue living
you made them and sustain them
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἄξιος εἶ, ὁ Κύριος καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, λαβεῖν τὴν δόξαν καὶ τὴν τιμὴν καὶ τὴν δύναμιν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἄξιος εἶ ὁ Κύριος καί ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν λαβεῖν τήν δόξαν καί τήν τιμήν καί τήν δύναμιν ὅτι σύ ἔκτισας τά παντᾶ καί διά τό θέλημα σοῦ ἦσαν καί ἐκτίσθησαν)
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the idea of glory, honor, and power, you could express the same ideas in another way. The UST models one way to do this.
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
σὺ ἔκτισας
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἄξιος εἶ ὁ Κύριος καί ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν λαβεῖν τήν δόξαν καί τήν τιμήν καί τήν δύναμιν ὅτι σύ ἔκτισας τά παντᾶ καί διά τό θέλημα σοῦ ἦσαν καί ἐκτίσθησαν)
For emphasis, the elders are stating the pronoun you, whose meaning is already present in the verb have created. If your language can state implied pronouns explicitly for emphasis, you may want to use that construction here in your translation. Other languages may have other ways of expressing this emphasis. Alternate translation: [it was you who created]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
ἦσαν, καὶ ἐκτίσθησαν
˱they˲_were (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἄξιος εἶ ὁ Κύριος καί ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν λαβεῖν τήν δόξαν καί τήν τιμήν καί τήν δύναμιν ὅτι σύ ἔκτισας τά παντᾶ καί διά τό θέλημα σοῦ ἦσαν καί ἐκτίσθησαν)
The expressions existed and were created mean similar things. The elders are using the two expressions together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [they came into being]
4:11 You are worthy: This phrase is never used of God in the Old Testament but was frequently used in Rome during emperor worship. As emphasized here, only God deserves worship.
• you created all things: Many in the ancient world believed that the gods were too busy to be concerned with humans. But God is Almighty in more than a philosophical sense; he is involved as Creator and Lord. In Revelation, creation affirms that God is in sovereign control of the world (see 3:14; 10:6; 14:7; 21:1).
• they exist because you created what you pleased: God had a purpose for everything that he created.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
