Paul explained that when the Lord Jesus returns, God will cause both the Christians who have died and those who will still be alive to ascend to meet the Lord Jesus in the sky. He also explained how the Thessalonians should behave as they waited for the Lord to return.
Because the Lord will return suddenly but people do not know when this will happen, Paul told the believers at Thessalonica that they should be prepared for the Lord Jesus to return at any time.

He died for us: In the Greek text this phrase is closely connected to 5:9b. It explains more clearly the phrase “through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
for us: Paul said that Jesus died in order to benefit believers in some way. In this case, 5:10b–c gives the benefit: “so that…we may live together with Him.”
so that, whether we are awake or asleep,
in order that, whether we(incl) are still alive or have died when he returns,
so that: This translates a conjunction that indicates one of the purposes for which Jesus died (5:10a), that is, that all believers will be able to live with Jesus forever.
whether we are awake: In this context, being are awake refers not to “being alert” (5:6b) but to being alive at the time when Jesus comes again.
or asleep: Paul was once more using sleep as a euphemism for “death,” as he did in 4:13a, 4:14b, and 4:15c.
we may live together with Him.
we(incl) will go and live together with him.
we may live together with Him: Commentators do not agree about which word together should be connected with. There are two possible interpretations:
It is connected with the phrase with Him and means that believers will live in heaven together with Christ. This seems to be what all English versions follow.
It is connected with the verb live and means “together with each other.” That is, the two groups of believers, those who are still alive when Jesus returns and those who have already died but whom God will resurrect, will together go and be with Jesus.
The first option is the most natural way to understand the Greek grammatical construction here. So it is recommended that you follow it (1).
Paul does not say where the believers will live with Jesus. The important point is that wherever Jesus is, on earth or in heaven, the believers will be with him.

Here, the phrase the one having died for us gives more information about “our Lord Jesus Christ.” It does not distinguish between several Christs. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a form that adds information instead of making distinctions. Alternate translation: [and he is the one who died for us] or [who died for us]

Here, the phrase so that introduces the purpose for which Jesus died. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a purpose. Alternate translation: [in order that]

Here Paul could be using the terms keep watch and sleep to refer to: (1) being alive and being dead. Alternate translation: [whether we are alive or die] (2) waiting expectantly for Jesus to return and being dead. Alternate translation: [whether we continue to expect Jesus to return or have died] (3) doing what pleases God and not doing what pleases God. Alternate translation: [whether we do not always please God or whether we do what pleases him]
5:10 The promise that believers will live with him forever is based on Christ’s resurrection (4:14).
• dead or alive: A reference to living and deceased believers (4:13-15) rather than people’s moral condition (as in 5:6-7).
