OET (OET-LV)For/Because yourselves exactly you_all_have_known that the_day of_the_master, as a_thief by night thus is_coming.

OET (OET-RV)because you already know that Yahweh’s day will come like a thief comes at night.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:13–5:11: Paul taught about when the Lord Jesus would return

Paul explained that when the Lord Jesus returns, God will cause both the Christians who have died and those who will still be alive to ascend to meet the Lord Jesus in the sky. He also explained how the Thessalonians should behave as they waited for the Lord to return.

Paragraph 5:1–3

Paul reminded the Thessalonians that no one can know when Jesus will return. When unbelievers think that all is well, Jesus will come suddenly, and they will not be able to escape being judged and punished by him.

5:2a

For you are fully aware

For you are fully aware: Paul had undoubtedly told the Thessalonians about these things when he was with them, but here he reminded them they could not know the exact day and time when Jesus would return.

5:2b

that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night: This whole sentence is a simile. Paul was not comparing Jesus to a thief who steals something. The point of the comparison is that Jesus will return unexpectedly, at a time when people are not prepared, in the same way that a thief comes during the night when people are asleep and not expecting him. Jesus himself taught similarly in Matthew 24:43. One way to express this would be:

the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief who comes at night (UBS handbook, p106).

the Day of the Lord: The phrase the Day of the Lord was a well-known phrase in the OT (for example, see Joel 2:31; Amos 5:18; Malachi 4:5). When this phrase occurred in the OT, “Lord” always referred to God the Father. The whole phrase therefore referred to the time when God would judge the people of the world and punish those who had sinned against him. However, in the NT, the Lord almost always refers to the Lord Jesus. So the Day of the Lord here means “the day when the Lord Jesus will return to earth.”

will come: In some languages it may not be possible to say that a day/time will come. If this is the case in your language, you may need to talk about Jesus himself coming.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτοί Γάρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί οὕτως ἔρχεται)

Here, the word For introduces a reason why the Thessalonians “have no need for anything to be written” to them about the timing of Jesus’ second coming. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason or basis for a previous claim. Alternate translation: [In fact,] or [Indeed,]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

αὐτοὶ & ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτοί Γάρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί οὕτως ἔρχεται)

For emphasis, Paul is stating the pronoun you, which is already implied in the verb know. If your language can state implied pronouns explicitly for emphasis, you may want to use that construction in your translation. Other languages may have other ways of bringing out this emphasis. The ULT does so by using the intensive pronoun yourselves. Alternate translation: [as for you, you know perfectly well] or [it is you who know perfectly well]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

ἔρχεται

˓is˒_coming

Here, Paul speaks of the day of the Lord as if it were a person who could come to a place. He means that the event named the day of the Lord will happen. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [will happen] or [occurs]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται

as ˓a˒_thief by (Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτοί Γάρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί οὕτως ἔρχεται)

Paul is saying that the day of the Lord is like a thief in the night because people cannot tell when either one will happen. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [comes in this manner—unexpectedly, as a thief comes unexpectedly in the night] or [comes when people are not looking for it, just as thief steals in the night when people are not looking]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

ὡς & οὕτως

as & thus

Having both terms in this manner and as in this sentence may be redundant in your language. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [as]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:2 For you know quite well: Paul reminds them of the teaching they had already received (3:3-4).
• The day of the Lord’s return is the time when God will come to judge humanity (Isa 13:6, 9; Ezek 30:3) and save his people (Joel 2:21-32; 3:18; Zech 14).
• like a thief in the night: Cp. Matt 24:43-44; Luke 12:39-40; 2 Pet 3:10; Rev 3:3; 16:15.

OET (OET-RV)because you already know that Yahweh’s day will come like a thief comes at night.
