Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

9:2 As punishment for their prostitution, the Lord would so reduce the Israelites’ harvests that they would go hungry (cp. Hag 1:3-11).
This section warns the people of Israel that the LORD will punish them because they have been unfaithful to him. When that happens, the people will no longer be able to celebrate at harvest time or enjoy the crops from their land. The section describes aspects of daily life that the people in Israel would clearly understand. Some examples are harvest festivals (9:1, 5), threshing grain and making wine (9:2), unclean food (9:3–4), offerings and sacrifices (9:4), briers and thorns (9:6), and prophets (9:7–8). There is also an indirect reference to Israel’s past (9:9).
Here are some other examples of section headings:
The Lord Will Punish Israel (ESV)
Hosea announces Israel’s Punishment (NLT)
Israel Will Be Punished (CEV)
The Sorrows of Exile (NJB)
This paragraph tells about joyful activities that the people will no longer experience when they are in exile in Assyria. In exile, they will no longer have joyful harvests or be able to offer acceptable sacrifices to God. Instead of rejoicing, they will mourn.
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:
2a The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them,
2band the new wine will fail them.
This verse tells about one of the consequences of the people of Israel rejecting the LORD. He will take away their grain and wine. This consequence probably resulted from their worship of the false god Baal. They believed that Baal gave them their grain and wine. This warning is similar to the words in Hosea 2:8. See the note in 2:8b on “the grain, the new wine and oil” for more details.
The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them,
But soon the threshing floors and winepresses will not produce enough food and drink to feed everyone.
Soon your people will go hungry. Your(sing) grain and wine will not be sufficient for them.
The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them: This clause has two related figures of speech (metonymy). They represent the products, grain and wine, that are produced at the threshing floor and winepress. It means that there will not be enough grain for the people to eat or enough wine for them to drink. In some languages, it may be more natural to translate the meaning directly. For example:
There won't be enough grain to feed people. There won't be enough wine to go around. (GW)
winepress: There are two main interpretations of the Hebrew word that the BSB translates as winepress:
The word means winepress. A winepress is a device that presses the juice from grapes. For example:
The threshing-floor and wine-press will not feed them (NJB) (BSB, CEV, ESV, GW, KJV, NAB, NASB, NET, NJPS, NCV, NIV, NJB, NLT, NRSV, REB)
The word means “olive-press.” An olive-press is a device that presses the oil from olives. For example, the GNT lists the products associated with a threshing-floor and an olive-press:
But soon you will not have enough grain and olive oil (GNT) (GNT)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1) along with most versions.
(combined/reordered)
But there will not be enough grain and wine for everyone.
and the new wine will fail them.
The new/fresh wine will be inadequate.
There will be no more grapes to press/squeeze into wine.
the new wine will fail them: This clause indicates that the amount of new wine will not be enough to meet the needs of the people.Wood (page 204), Davies (page 214).
Here is another way to translate this clause:
there won't be enough new wine (NCV)
new wine: See the note on this same product in 2:8b for more details. If new wine is not familiar in your language area, you may use a more general term. For example:
there will be no wine (GNT)
them: There is a textual difference here that involves the word them:
The LXX and other ancient versions have them. them refers to the people of Israel. For example:
the new wine shall fail them (RSV) (BSB, ESV, NAB, NASB, NET, NIV, NRSV, REB)
The Masoretic Text has “her.” “Her” refers to the nation of Israel. For example:
the new wine shall betray her (NJPS) (NJPS)
Options (1) and (2) are two ways to refer to Israel. It is recommended that you follow option (1) along with most versions.
In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. For example:
But you will run short of grain and wine (CEV)
