1:3-17 burnt offering (Hebrew ‘olah, “what goes up”): The Hebrew word implies the ascent of the animal in flame and smoke. Except for its hide, given in payment to the officiating priest (7:8), this offering was burned completely on the altar (1:9). Its purpose was to satisfy God’s wrath against sin, ceremonially cleansing the worshiper and restoring him or her to fellowship with God (cp. Rom 3:25; 8:3; 2 Cor 5:18-21). The whole burnt offering occurs first in this list of offerings (Lev 1–7), providing a pattern for offerings that follow. It is the most common and most general atoning offering.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
מִן־הָע֛וֹף & מִן־הַתֹּרִ֗ים א֛וֹ מִן־בְּנֵ֥י הַיּוֹנָ֖ה
from/more_than the,birds & from/more_than the,turtledoves or from/more_than sons_of the,pigeons
The expressions from the birds, from the turtledoves, and from the sons of the pigeon do not refer to specific birds, that is, to a specific group of turtledoves or pigeons. Rather, these expressions describe any birds (that is, any turtledoves or pigeons) that an Israelite might own or be able to purchase for sacrifice. Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. Alternate translation: “from his birds … from his turtledoves or from his pigeons”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
מִן־בְּנֵ֥י הַיּוֹנָ֖ה
from/more_than from/more_than from/more_than sons_of the,pigeons
The expression sons of describes a person or animal that shares the essential qualities of something. The author of Leviticus uses this phrase to describe a group of birds as the sons of the pigeon since they were birds that shared the essential qualities of that class of birds. If it would be helpful, you could use an equivalent idiom from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “from the pigeons”
