MSG (3-9)“If the offering is a Whole-Burnt-Offering from the herd, present a male without a defect at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting that it may be accepted by God. Lay your hand on the head of the Whole-Burnt-Offering so that it may be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you. Slaughter the bull in God’s presence. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will make an offering of the blood by splashing it against all sides of the Altar that stands at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Next, skin the Whole-Burnt-Offering and cut it up. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will prepare a fire on the Altar, carefully laying out the wood, and then arrange the body parts, including the head and the suet, on the wood prepared for the fire on the Altar. 1:4 “Make you right”: or, “make atonement.” The concept is that due to sin, the relationship with God has been fractured. The various rituals described in Leviticus are symbols of how the relationship can be restored, or “made right” in God's eyes. In addition people and objects (for example, the altar) can also be “made right” in the sense of being purified, so this term is also used in this translation.

1:4 Lay your hand on the animal’s head: The sacrificial animal represented the worshiper in the ceremony (4:4, 15, 24, 29, 33; 16:21). This act signified that the animal’s death represented the death of its owner. In the ritual for the Day of Atonement, it signified that the sins of the owner were transferred to the animal (16:20-22). With the peace offering (3:2, 8, 13), the act seems to have indicated ownership of the animal being sacrificed.
• The phrase in your place may mean “in payment for sin” (sometimes called expiation) or “as a substitute for the sinner’s death” (sometimes called propitiation).
• to purify you, making you right with him (or to make atonement for you): Although older commentaries describe this process as “covering over” sin, recent scholarship defines it as “blotting out, erasing, or cleansing from” sin. The concept involves satisfying God’s wrath against sin, ceremonially cleansing the worshiper, and restoring fellowship with God in the community of God’s people.
