Section 22:7–13: Jesus sent two disciples to prepare for the Passover celebration

This section begins on “the Day of Unleavened Bread.” On that day the Jewish people had to remove from their houses all “leaven” (yeast) and any bread or other food that was made with yeast. Also on that day, each family had to sacrifice a lamb for the Passover meal. In the context of sacrifice, people could refer to any of these lambs as “the Passover” without adding the word “lamb.” For example, see Exodus 12:21 and Deuteronomy 16:2. This is similar to its use in 1 Corinthians 5:7: “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”

Luke, Paul, and other New Testament writers implied that the lamb that was sacrificed on Passover symbolized the fact that Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice to save people from slavery to sin. Jesus knew that during the time of the festival, he himself would become a sacrifice. He would become the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

In this section, Jesus sent two disciples to make preparations for the Passover celebration.

So: In Greek this verse begins with a common conjunction. The BSB translates this word as So. It introduces what the two disciples did as a result of Jesus’ instructions to them in 22:8–12. Some English versions introduce the verse with “And.” In some languages it may be natural to introduce it with a clause. For example:

they: The word they refers to Peter and John, the disciples whom Jesus sent to prepare for the Passover meal. In some languages it may be helpful to refer back to them more explicitly. For example:

went: In this context the verb went implies that Peter and John left Jesus to go to Jerusalem to do what he told them to do. In some languages it may be helpful to include a location with the verb. For example:

left for Jerusalem

set out for the city

and found it just as Jesus had told them: In Greek the verb found has no object here. The BSB supplies the word it because an object is needed in English. In this context the phrase found…just as is used in a special way. It indicates that the disciples saw that everything happened exactly as Jesus told them before they went.

This same phrase found…just as was used in 19:32. In that context Jesus told his disciples where to find a colt for him to ride into Jerusalem. In that situation also, everything happened exactly as Jesus said it would. You may be able to translate in a similar way here in 22:13. See the note on 19:32b for more information.

And: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as And introduces what the disciples did next. Connect this part of the verse to 22:13b in a way that is natural in your language.

they prepared the Passover: The clause they prepared the Passover indicates that Peter and John made the preparations for Passover that were mentioned in 22:8. You may translate in a similar but briefer way here. Your translation should fit with 22:8 so that readers will understand that Peter and John followed Jesus’ instructions. See the note on 22:8b–c.

On the Thursday before he was crucified, Jesus had arranged to share the Passover meal with his disciples in an upper room, traditionally thought to be located in the Essene Quarter of Jerusalem. After they finished the meal, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often met with his disciples. There Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ own disciples, betrayed him to soldiers sent from the High Priest, and they took Jesus to the High Priest’s residence. In the morning the leading priests and teachers of the law put Jesus on trial and found him guilty of blasphemy. The council sent Jesus to stand trial for treason before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who resided at the Praetorium while in Jerusalem. The Praetorium was likely located at the former residence of Herod the Great, who had died over 30 years earlier. When Pilate learned that Jesus was from Galilee, he sent him to Herod Antipas, who had jurisdiction over Galilee. But when Jesus gave no answer to Herod’s many questions, Herod and his soldiers sent him back to Pilate, who conceded to the people’s demands that Jesus be crucified. Jesus was forced to carry his cross out of the city gate to Golgotha, meaning Skull Hill, referring to what may have been a small unquarried hill in the middle of an old quarry just outside the gate. After Jesus was unable to carry his cross any further, a man named Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry it for him. There at Golgotha they crucified Jesus. After Jesus died, his body was hurriedly taken down before nightfall and placed in a newly cut, rock tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish high council. This tomb was likely located at the perimeter of the old quarry.
