SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–11: Believers must not take fellow believers to court before unbelieving judges

In this section Paul discussed another problem in the church in Corinth. At least one of the believers had taken another believer to a pagan/civil court to settle a dispute. Paul told the Corinthian believers that this was unwise and harmful to the church. He taught them what they as believers should do if another believer wronged them.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Believers should not go to law before unbelievers

Christians should not sue other Christians in pagan courts

Advice about lawsuits

Paragraph 6:9–11

This paragraph is another basis for Paul’s appeal to the Corinthian believers not to take each other to court. The basis is that the unrighteous will not enter God’s kingdom (verse 9). Some of the Corinthian believers had been very unrighteous in the past, but Paul reminded them that they should now live righteous lives because of what Christ has done for them (verse 11). Therefore they should no longer take each other to court.

6:10a

nor thieves,

thieves: The Greek word that the BSB translates as thieves refers in general to people who steal from others. It is usually used of people who sneak into others’ houses and take their things without permission. It does not refer to people who violently attack others and forcibly take their things (“robbers”; see 6:10e).

6:10b

nor the greedy,

the greedy: The Greek word that the BSB translates as greedy is the same word as in 5:10b. It refers to people who are never satisfied with their possessions. They strongly desire more and more things for themselves.

6:10c

nor drunkards,

drunkards: The Greek word that the BSB translates as drunkards is the same word as in 5:11g. It refers to people who often get drunk/intoxicated by drinking too much alcoholic drink.

6:10d

nor verbal abusers,

verbal abusers: The Greek word that the BSB translates as verbal abusers refers to people who insult others and speak harsh, abusive words to them. It is the same word as in 5:11f. See also the note on “vilified” at 4:12b. Another way to translate it is:

anyone who curses…others (CEV)

6:10e

nor swindlers,

swindlers: The Greek word that the BSB translates as swindlers refers to people who deceive others in order to take their money or possessions. It is the same word as in 5:10b and 5:11h. Here is another way to translate this:

who cheats (CEV)

6:10f

will inherit the kingdom of God.

will inherit the kingdom of God: See 6:9a and the notes on 6:9a.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

πλεονέκται

coveters

Paul is using the adjective greedy as a noun in order to describe a group of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [people who are greedy] or [greedy people]

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

λοίδοροι

insulters

Here, slanderers is the same word that is translated “verbally abusive” in [5:11](../05/11.md). It describes someone who shows anger by using vicious words to attack others. Use a word in your language that describes this kind of person. Alternate translation: [vocally vicious people]

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

ἅρπαγες

swindlers

Here, swindlers is the same word that is translated “swindler” in [5:11](../05/11.md). It identifies a person who takes money from others dishonestly. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express swindlers with a word that refers to such people. Alternate translation: [embezzlers]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

κληρονομήσουσιν

˓will_be˒_inheriting

Here Paul speaks of the kingdom of God as if it were property that a parent could pass on to their child when the parent dies. Here, Paul uses the word inherit to refer to being able to live in the kingdom of God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [will live in]
