OET (OET-RV)because a price was paid to buy you, so honour God with your bodies.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:12–20: Believers must live pure lives because they belong to the Lord

In 6:12–20 Paul talked about another problem in the church in Corinth. He had heard that some people in Corinth were behaving immorally. It appears that some of the Christians there were saying that it was all right for them to live as they pleased, because God would save and forgive them. They were saying that it did not matter what they did with their bodies. Paul said that they were wrong. In this section he told them why as believers they should honor God in everything they did.

Paragraph 6:18–20

Paul again commanded the believers not to behave in sexually immoral ways. Then he gave more reasons for this command: A person ruins his body as the Holy Spirit’s living place if he takes part in sexual immorality. God bought our bodies by paying a big price for them. So our bodies belong to him, and we must honor him by using our bodies in right ways.

6:20a

you were bought at a price.

you were bought at a price: This is a metaphor taken from the custom of buying slaves in the market. When a man bought a slave, he became the owner of the slave. The slave was obliged to obey his new master. In a similar way a believer does not belong to himself. He or she now belongs to God, and God may command him or her to live for him just as he chooses. The verb you were bought is in the passive. So there are two ways to translate this clause:

a price: The Greek word that the BSB translates as price refers to the cost of freeing people from sin and making them God’s own people. Paul does not tell us here what price God paid to make us his own possession. However, he implies that it was not cheap or easy. Nor does Paul say to whom the price was paid. You should not try to supply this information.

6:20b

Therefore glorify God with your body.

Therefore: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Therefore introduces a command Paul gave to the Corinthians. On the basis of what he has told them, Paul commanded the Corinthians to honor God by the way they lived. The GNT translates this as “So.”

glorify God with your body: Paul was addressing the whole group, but he used the word body as though he were talking to only one person. He wanted each hearer to listen to it as a command to himself. Consider whether it is more natural for you to use the singular or plural in this context. The KJV has some extra words at the end of 6:20. It says: “For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” These final words translated as “and in your spirit, which are God’s,” are found in many Greek texts. But since these words are not found in many of the oldest Greek texts, which are considered more accurate, most English versions do not include them. It is recommended that you do not include these words in your translation. Other ways to translate this include:

use your body to honor God (CEV)

use your bodies for God’s glory (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἠγοράσθητε & τιμῆς

˱you_all˲_˓were˒_bought & ˱with˲_˓a˒_price

Here Paul speaks if the Corinthians were slaves whom God had bought with a price from someone else. Paul is speaking of what we often call “redemption.” The price is Christ’s death on the cross, which “redeems” believers from sin and evil powers. This is an important biblical metaphor so, if possible, preserve the metaphor or express it as an analogy. Alternate translation: [you were bought with a price, which is the Messiah’s death]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἠγοράσθητε & τιμῆς

˱you_all˲_˓were˒_bought & ˱with˲_˓a˒_price

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are bought rather than the person doing the “buying.” If you must state who did the action, Paul implies that “God” did it. Alternate translation: [God bought you with a price]

ἐν τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν

in the body ˱of˲_you_all

Alternate translation: [with your body] or [with what you do with your body]

Note 3 topic: translate-textvariants

ἐν τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν

in the body ˱of˲_you_all

After your body, a few early manuscripts include “and in your spirit, which belong to God.” Most early manuscripts do not include these additional words. If possible, do not include this addition.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:12-20 Paul gives several reasons why Christians must not engage in sexual immorality.
