In 6:12–20 Paul talked about another problem in the church in Corinth. He had heard that some people in Corinth were behaving immorally. It appears that some of the Christians there were saying that it was all right for them to live as they pleased, because God would save and forgive them. They were saying that it did not matter what they did with their bodies. Paul said that they were wrong. In this section he told them why as believers they should honor God in everything they did.
Paul again commanded the believers not to behave in sexually immoral ways. Then he gave more reasons for this command: A person ruins his body as the Holy Spirit’s living place if he takes part in sexual immorality. God bought our bodies by paying a big price for them. So our bodies belong to him, and we must honor him by using our bodies in right ways.
Flee from sexual immorality.
¶ Be very careful that you do not behave immorally.
¶ Have nothing at all to do with sexually bad ways.
¶ Absolutely do not have sex with anyone except your spouse.
Flee from sexual immorality: This is a strongly worded command. Paul told them to avoid all connection with sexually bad behavior. The Greek word that the BSB translates as sexual immorality is the same word as in 5:1b. See the note there.
Flee: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Flee is a figure of speech. To Flee means to run away from something or someone. Paul was not commanding the Corinthian believers to literally run away. Rather, he was saying “Be very, very careful not to commit sexual sin.” There are two ways to translate this figure of speech:
literally, keeping the figure of speech. For example:
run away from sexual sin (NCV)
remove the figure of speech. For example:
Don’t be immoral in matters of sex. (CEV)
Try to retain the figure of speech if this makes the command more emphatic or memorable. If necessary you may substitute a slightly different figure of speech. For example:
Avoid immorality like the plague!
Paul now gave a reason for his strong command in 6:18a. He explained that there was a difference between sexual wrongdoing and other kinds of wrongdoing. Other wrongdoings may harm the body, but they do not cause the believer’s body to become one with someone outside of God’s will. Sexual wrongdoing harms the believer in a way no other wrongdoing does.
This is a general principle. It is true of everyone. In this context Paul was specifically thinking of “a man” who might visit a prostitute, but his main point applies to women as well as to men. It is therefore possible to translate this using a different subject. For example:
Other sins that people commit don’t affect their bodies the same way that sexual sins do. (GW)
Every sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the fornicator sins against the body itself. (NRSV)

Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body: The BSB, like most English versions, supplies the word other. It is not explicit in the Greek text. Paul was indicating that other sins were different from sexual sins in that they do not affect or involve the body in the same way. Other ways to translate this include:
All other sins that people may commit are done outside the body. (NJB)
Every other sin people do is outside their bodies. (CEV)
but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
But when people have sex with people they are not married to, they sin against their own body.
But people who behave in sexually bad ways are wronging their own bodies.
that having sex with someone they are not married to harms them.
he who sins sexually sins against his own body: When a believer gives his body to become one with a prostitute, he ruins himself both morally (by breaking God’s laws) and spiritually (by greatly harming his union with Christ). He forgets God’s purpose for his body. He has chosen to disobey God’s laws about what is right and what is wrong.
There are several ways to combine the information and show the contrast in these verse parts. For example:
That is a sin against your own body in a way that no other sin is. (CEV)
No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. (NLT)

Here Paul wants the Corinthians to avoid sexual immorality as urgently as if it were an enemy or danger that they might Flee from. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [Carefully stay away from] or [Fight against]

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind immorality, you can express the idea by using an adjective such as “immoral.” Alternate translation: [what is sexually immoral] or [sexually immoral behavior]

Although man and his are masculine, Paul is using these words to refer to anyone, whether man or woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express man and his with non gendered words or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [a man or woman … his or her own]
