Section 2:1–18: The king chose a new queen

Some time later the king decided to choose a new queen to replace Vashti. Many beautiful girls were brought to the palace and Esther was among them. When her turn came to go to the king, he liked her better than any other girl, so he chose her to be his new queen.

Paragraph 2:15–18

In these verses, the story returns to Esther and Mordecai, the main characters in the story. If you have a way in your language to indicate this, you should use it here.

2:17a

And the king loved Esther more than all the other women,

The reference to the length of the king’s reign at the end of 2:16 has interrupted the story about Esther, so in order to resume the story, you may need to repeat the fact that Esther went to the king. See the Display.

2:17b

and she found grace and favor in his sight more than all of the other virgins.

2:17c

So he placed the royal crown upon her head

and made her queen in place of Vashti.

וַ⁠יֶּאֱהַ֨ב הַ⁠מֶּ֤לֶךְ אֶת־אֶסְתֵּר֙ מִ⁠כָּל־הַ⁠נָּשִׁ֔ים וַ⁠תִּשָּׂא־חֵ֥ן וָ⁠חֶ֛סֶד לְ⁠פָנָ֖י⁠ו מִ⁠כָּל־הַ⁠בְּתוּלֹ֑ת

and,he_loved the=king DOM ʼEştēr from=all the,women and,she_bore graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty and,favor before,,him from=all the,virgins

These two phrases mean almost the same thing. The information is given twice, in slightly different ways, to emphasize that Ahasuerus was completely convinced that Esther was the one he should make his queen. “More than all the virgins” basically duplicates the meaning of “more than all the women,” so, if this duplication would be confusing in your language, you don’t need to include both phrases, or you could say, “more than all of them” for the second phrase.

This is a rare expression in Hebrew, and the exact meaning is uncertain. See how you translated similar phrases in [2:9](../02/09.md) and [2:15](../02/15.md). Review the explanation there if that would be helpful. In this context, it probably means that King Ahasuerus was very impressed with both Esther’s appearance and her personality.
