Section 2:1–18: The king chose a new queen

Some time later the king decided to choose a new queen to replace Vashti. Many beautiful girls were brought to the palace and Esther was among them. When her turn came to go to the king, he liked her better than any other girl, so he chose her to be his new queen.

In these verses, the story returns to Esther and Mordecai, the main characters in the story. If you have a way in your language to indicate this, you should use it here.

Then the king held a great banquet, Esther’s banquet, for all his officials and servants.

He proclaimed a tax holiday in the provinces

tax holiday: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as holiday is more literally “causing to rest.” There are two main ways that English versions translate this word:

  1. It refers to any type of holiday. (NIV, GNT, NCV, CEV)

  2. It refers to a period of not paying taxes, something that kings of that time sometimes did to celebrate special events. (BSB, NJPS, RSV)

It is recommended that you follow the first option.

2:18c

and gave gifts worthy of the king’s bounty.

worthy of the king’s bounty: This means that the king did it in a way which displayed his generosity. He did it in the way people expected a king to behave.

The king did this to celebrate Esther becoming the queen. You can say this explicitly. For example, you can say, “Then, to celebrate her becoming the queen, the king hosted a great feast.”

You could indicate to your readers this is the name that Ahasuerus gave to the feast, for example, “He called it ‘Esther’s Feast.’”

This was probably a “tax holiday,” that is, a temporary elimination of taxes. For a time, the provinces did not have to send in the usual taxes to the king. You could say something like “he proclaimed a temporary reprieve from taxes for all the provinces of his empire.”

Here, hand represents the action of doing or giving. The phrase means that King Ahasuerus personally gave lavish gifts to the guests at this feast. You could say something like “with royal generosity” or “with great willingness to give” or “with generosity that only a king can give.”

• declaring a public holiday: The Hebrew word translated “public holiday” (hanakhah) is related to the verb that means “rest” (nukh). The book as a whole describes how the Jewish people obtained rest from the threats of their enemies (see 9:16-22).
