OET (OET-RV) Then the king hosted a large celebration and invited all his officials and servants to a feast to celebrate Esther becoming queen. He proclaimed that this would be a time to celebrate for people in all of the provinces of his empire when they wouldn’t have to pay taxes, and he gave many generous gifts.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה גָד֗וֹל

and=he/it_made the=king banquet great

The king did this to celebrate Esther becoming the queen. You can say this explicitly. For example, you can say, “Then, to celebrate her becoming the queen, the king hosted a great feast.”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

מִשְׁתֵּ֣ה אֶסְתֵּ֑ר

banquet ʼEşttēr's

You could indicate to your readers this is the name that Ahasuerus gave to the feast, for example, “He called it ‘Esther’s Feast.’”

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

וַהֲנָחָ֤ה לַמְּדִינוֹת֙ עָשָׂ֔ה

and,holiday to_the,provinces he/it_had_made

This was probably a “tax holiday,” that is, a temporary elimination of taxes. For a time, the provinces did not have to send in the usual taxes to the king. You could say something like “he proclaimed a temporary reprieve from taxes for all the provinces of his empire.”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

כְּיַ֥ד הַמֶּֽלֶךְ

with,liberality the,royal

Here, hand represents the action of doing or giving. The phrase means that King Ahasuerus personally gave lavish gifts to the guests at this feast. You could say something like “with royal generosity” or “with great willingness to give” or “with generosity that only a king can give.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:18 he gave a great banquet in Esther’s honor: Now the king honored his wife instead of putting her on display (cp. 1:11).
• declaring a public holiday: The Hebrew word translated “public holiday” (hanakhah) is related to the verb that means “rest” (nukh). The book as a whole describes how the Jewish people obtained rest from the threats of their enemies (see 9:16-22).
