Hebrew word order

OET-LVNo OET-LV JOEL 2:29 verse available

OET (OET-RV)At that time I’ll pour out my spirit
⇔ even on the male and female slaves.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

וְגַ֥ם עַל־הָֽעֲבָדִ֖ים וְעַל־הַשְּׁפָח֑וֹת

(vəgam ˊal-hāˊₐⱱādim vəˊal-hashshəfāḩōt)

Yahweh is speaking of two things in order to mean them and everything in between. This verse continues the thought of the previous verse, that the Spirit will come to a great variety of people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [Yes, even on people of low social status and of both genders]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔מָּה

(bayyāmim hāhēmmāh)

Yahweh is using the term days to mean a period of time, by association with the way days make up longer periods of time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [at that time]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֶשְׁפּ֖וֹךְ אֶת־רוּחִֽי

(ʼeshpōk ʼet-rūḩiy)

See how you translated this in [2:28](../02/28.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:28-32 The prophet looked beyond his time to the future day of the Lord, when God would pour out his Spirit in ways never before seen and would perform signs and wonders for all humanity to see. The apostle Peter quoted this passage as being fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:16-21).
