Paul wanted to bring honor to Christ whether he lived or died. He knew that dying and being with Christ would be the supreme good, but he also wanted to be with the Philippians to help them grow in their faith. And he expected that God would let him continue living and helping others.
Paul wanted very much to go and be with Christ, but it was more necessary for the Philippian believers that he continue living.
But it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
But it is more important that I continue to live because you need me.
more necessary: Although Paul considered it better to die and be with Christ, he also recognized that at that time it was more important or urgent for Paul to continue living. The Philippian believers had a need for Paul’s advice and encouragement.
for you: That is, “for your sake” or “so I can help you.”
remain in the body: That is, “continue to live.” See 1:22a for the same phrase.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
τὸ δὲ ἐπιμένειν ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τό δέ ἐπιμένειν ἐν τῇ σαρκί ἀναγκαιότερον διʼ ὑμᾶς)
The phrase but remain in the flesh means to remain alive in one’s body on earth. See how you translated flesh in [1:22](../01/22.md). If this would be unclear in your language, consider stating this plainly. Alternate translation: [but to continue in the body] or [but to continue to live on this earth]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
ἀναγκαιότερον
more_necessary
In the phrase is more necessary Paul leaves out the implied words “than departing” because he knows that his readers will understand them from the context. If this would be unclear in your language, consider supplying these omitted words in your translation. Alternate translation: [rather than departing is more necessary]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular
ὑμᾶς
you_all
See how you translated the word your in [1:5](../01/05.md).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
