OET (OET-LV)for the fellowship of_you_all in the good_message, from the first day until the time now,

OET (OET-RV)because the good message united us in fellowship from the first day until now.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:3–11: Paul thanked God for the Philippians and prayed for them

In 1:3–11 Paul thanked God for the Philippian believers. He told them that he prayed for them and loved them very much.

Paragraph 1:3–8

Paul told the Philippians that he often thanked God for them and prayed for them. They were a great help to him in preaching the gospel, and Paul loved them deeply.

1:5a

because of your partnership in the gospel

because of your partnership in the gospel: This phrase has been understood in two ways:

  1. It gives the reason why Paul prayed with joy. (BSB, NIV, GNT, NET, NJB, REB, GW, NLT)

  2. It gives the reason why Paul thanked God (in 1:3). Many commentaries follow this interpretation. (RSV, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow the first interpretation (1).

Commentators agree that the phrase your partnership in the gospel refers to the Philippians helping Paul to proclaim the gospel through giving money, praying, encouraging others and by proclaiming it themselves. See “fellowship", sense A2 in KBT.

gospel: The Greek word translated as gospel means “good news.” See “gospel" in KBT. Look for a common phrase in your language that means “good news.” Other ways to translate it are:

God’s good news

the good message

1:5b

from the first day until now,

from the first day until now: This means “from the first time you heard the gospel and believed it until now.” There is a similar reference in 4:15b (literally, “in the beginning of the gospel”). The two phrases both mean that as soon as they had accepted the gospel, the Philippians immediately began to cooperate with Paul in spreading the gospel to others. It will probably be helpful for you to make explicit in your translation the implied information that the first day means the time the Philippians first believed the gospel. For example:

from the first day you believed (NCV)

until now: This means “you are still doing it.” It does not mean they stopped helping Paul at the time when he wrote the letter. They were continuing to help him at that time.

General Comment on 1:5

In some languages it may be better to reverse 1:5a and 1:5b, and put the time phrase earlier in the verse. For example:

I pray with joy because ever since you first accepted the gospel and until now, you have been partners with me in spreading the gospel.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ἐπὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, ἀπὸ τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπί τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τό εὐαγγέλιον ἀπό τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν)

Here, because could refer to: (1) the reason that Paul gives thanks to God. Alternate translation: [I give thanks to God because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now] (2) the reason for Paul’s joy.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

ὑμῶν

˱of˲_you_all

The word your is plural and refers to the Philippian Christians. In this letter, with one exception, the words “you” and “your” are always plural and always refer to the Philippian Christians. If your language uses different forms to show when “you” and “your” refer to one person and when they refer to more than one person, use the plural form that would be appropriate in your language in this occurrence and all other occurrences of “you” and “your” in this letter, except for in [4:3](../04/03.md). A note will discuss the one exception in [4:3](../04/03.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον

the fellowship ˱of˲_you_all in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπί τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τό εὐαγγέλιον ἀπό τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν)

Here, your fellowship in the gospel refers to the Philippians’ partnering with Paul in the various things involved in spreading the good news about Jesus. This includes gifts of money that they sent to Paul (See: [4:15–18](../04/15.md)). You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [your participation with me in advancing the gospel] or [your partnership with me in working to spread the good news about Jesus]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπὸ τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπί τῇ κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τό εὐαγγέλιον ἀπό τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν)

The phrase from the first day refers to the time at which the Philippian believers first believed the gospel that Paul preached to them. This may also have been the first day that Paul preached in Philippi. Alternate translation: [from the time you first heard and believed the gospel that I preached]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν

until the_‹time› now

The phrase until now does not mean that the Philippian believers have now stopped partnering with Paul. Rather, it means that they are still partnering with Paul. Alternate translation: [that we are still sharing now]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:5 Their partnership included financial support (see 4:10-20).

OET (OET-RV)because the good message united us in fellowship from the first day until now.
