OET (OET-LV)But the master stood_by by_me, and strengthened me, in_order_that through me the proclamation may_be_fully_assured, and all the pagans may_hear, and I_was_rescued out_of the_mouth of_the_lion.

OET (OET-RV)But the master stood by me and strengthened me to ensure that the good message was proclaimed and all the pagans heard it, and I was rescued out of the lion’s mouth so to speak.

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

Here the word But introduces what the Lord did in contrast to what the rest of the believers did (see [4:16](../04/16.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces this kind of contrast, or you could leave But untranslated. Alternate translation: [In contrast,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὁ & Κύριός μοι παρέστη

the & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

Here Paul speaks as if the Lord had physically stood with him. He means that the Lord supported and helped him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the Lord was with me] or [the Lord helped me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

δι’ ἐμοῦ τὸ κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ

through me (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [I might fulfill the proclamation]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

δι’ ἐμοῦ τὸ κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ

through me (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

Here Paul may mean that the proclamation was fulfilled: (1) because he was able to proclaim the good news in every place and way that God required of him. Alternate translation: [I might accomplish my task of proclamation] or [I might complete the proclamation that I was called to perform] (2) because he proclaimed the entire gospel message. Alternate translation: [I could proclaim the full message] or [through me the complete proclamation might be made]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὸ κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of proclamation, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the gospel might be fully proclaimed]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

πάντα τὰ ἔθνη

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

Paul says all here as an overstatement for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [very many Gentiles]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

Here Paul speaks as if he was about to be eaten by a lion when he was rescued out of the mouth of that lion. He means that he was protected from terrible danger, which was most likely the danger of being executed. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in simile form or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I was rescued from danger, as if I had been in the mouth of a lion] or [I was rescued from being executed]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐρύσθην

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Κύριος μοί παρέστη καί ἐνεδυνάμωσεν μέ ἵνα διʼ ἐμοῦ τό κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καί ἀκούσωσιν παντᾶ τά ἔθνη καί ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, it is clear from the context that it was God. Alternate translation: [God rescued me]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:17 so that I might preach the Good News: Paul had turned his defense in court into proclamation of the Good News—just as in his earlier experiences (Acts 22:1–24:27; 26:1-29; see also 2 Tim 2:9-10; Phil 1:12-14).
• for all the Gentiles to hear: Paul sensed that he had completed his task (2 Tim 4:7-8). The Old Testament specifically anticipates the conversion of the nations (e.g., Ps 22:27-29).
• from certain death (literally from the mouth of a lion): The lion is often a metaphor for enemies (see Pss 7:2; 35:17; cp. Dan 6; Heb 11:33). Here, it might refer to literal lions in the amphitheater, to the emperor, to the false teachers, or to Satan (1 Pet 5:8; cp. Ps 22:21).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
