Here the writer is speaking of God’s opposition as if God built siege works against him and surrounded him like an army besieging a city. Your language may have comparable expressions that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [He set himself against me and hemmed me in]

The terms poison and hardship mean similar things. The writer is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [with bitter suffering]
