2:4 With a prayer: The king was subject to the God of heaven, and Nehemiah needed God’s guidance and provision as he made his request.


UTNuW Translation Notes:

עַל־מַה־זֶּ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ

Alternate translation: “What do you want me to do for you”

The implication is that Nehemiah prayed to God before he answered the king. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this explicitly. Alternate translation: “Before I answered him, I prayed”
