OET (OET-RV)Instead of those, he’ll honour the god of fortresses—a god his ancestors had never even heard of. He’ll honour that god with gold and silver, and with precious stones and treasures.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:36–39

This paragraph speaks of the success of the evil king of the North. Some scholars take this king to still be Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Other scholars understand this to refer to another evil king, like Antiochus, who has yet to come to power.11:35 See the footnote in the NET. It is recommended that you do not specify the identity of this king other than to refer to him as the king of the North (as he is called in 11:40b).

11:38a

And in their place, he will honor a god of fortresses—

And in their place, he will honor a god of fortresses: This verse part tells which god the evil king would honor. He would honor a god who protects fortresses, that is, a warlike god.11:38 If the reference is still to Antiochus IV, then this god may be the Roman god Jupiter, whom the Greeks called Zeus. Antiochus built him a temple in the city of Antioch. In your translation, consider where and how it is natural to translate the phrase in their place (that is, instead of the gods of his ancestors). For example:

Instead of these, he will worship the god of fortresses (NLT)

He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these (RSV)

What he will honor is a god of fortresses (NET)

11:38b

a god his fathers did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches.

a god his fathers did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches: This verse part continues the thought of the previous verse part. It describes how the evil king would honor the god of fortresses whom he chose to worship.

a god his fathers did not know: This phrase describes this god of fortresses. This would be a god whom the ancestors of the evil king did not know, that is, worship. There are at least two ways to translate it:

with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches: The text does not say exactly how the king would honor the god of fortresses. The thought may be that he would honor him by building him a beautiful temple, a temple decorated with gold and silver and precious stones. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and lavish on him gold, silver, precious stones, and expensive gifts (NLT)

With gold, silver, precious stones, and other expensive things he will honor (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

וְלֶאֱלֹ֨הַּ֙ מָֽעֻזִּ֔ים

and_(to),a,god_of fortresses

The king probably believed that this false god would help him to attack other people’s fortresses and keep his own. Alternate translation: “the god that controls fortresses”

עַל־כַּנּ֖וֹ

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in place_of,its

The word these refers to the gods mentioned in [Daniel 11:37](../11/37.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
