SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:36–39

This paragraph speaks of the success of the evil king of the North. Some scholars take this king to still be Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Other scholars understand this to refer to another evil king, like Antiochus, who has yet to come to power.11:35 See the footnote in the NET. It is recommended that you do not specify the identity of this king other than to refer to him as the king of the North (as he is called in 11:40b).

11:37a

He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers,

He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as He will show no regard for means that this king will deliberately neglect the traditional gods of his nation. He will not honor them. Here are some other ways to translate this:

He shall pay no respect to the gods of his ancestors, (NRSV)

He will have no respect for the gods of his ancestors (NLT)

This king will reject the gods his ancestors worshiped (CEV)

The king will ignore the god his ancestors served (GNT)

11:37b

nor for the one desired by women,

nor for the one desired by women: The phrase the one desired by women probably refers to a pagan god that women honored and worshiped, perhaps in the hope of becoming pregnant. The king would ignore or reject this god also. There are at least two ways to translate this:

11:37c

nor for any other god,

nor for any other god: There is an ellipsis here. The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as “regard” in 11:37a is implied here. This phrase refers to honoring a deity. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

He will not respect any god (NET)

he shall pay no respect to any other god (NRSV)

In some languages it may be natural to leave the verb implicit here, as the NLT has done:

or for any other god (NLT)

11:37d

because he will magnify himself above them all.

because he will magnify himself above them all: The function of the Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as because he will magnify himself above them all can be understood in several ways:

  1. it gives the reason why this evil king behaves as he does. For example:

for he shall consider himself greater than all (NRSV) (BSB, KJV, NASB, RSV/NRSV, NLT, ESV, GNT)

  2. it is a contrast to the phrase “regard any god.” For example:

Instead, he will make himself more important than any god. (NCV) (NIV, NCV)

  3. it is a summary statement that emphasizes 11:37a-b. For example:

In fact, he will put himself above all gods. (CEV) (NJB, CEV, NET)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This agrees with the normal meaning of the Hebrew conjunction that the BSB translates as because. The NASB is therefore used as the Source Line in the Display. Here are some other ways to translate this:

for he will boast that he is greater than all (NLT)

because he will think he is greater than any of them (GNT)

magnify himself: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as magnify himself means to make oneself great or make oneself look great. This king wanted to be seen as very important and powerful, even more so than the gods that his people worshiped. See how you translated this word in 11:36b (the second verb, which the BSB translates as “magnify himself”). Compare also 8:4d, 8a, 11a, where different forms of the same verb are used.

uW Translation Notes:

וְעַל־חֶמְדַּ֥ת נָשִׁ֛ים

and,on and,on desired_of women/wives

This seems to refer to the pagan god named Tammuz.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
