OET (OET-LV) And_those_who_have_insight_of the_people they_will_give_understanding to_people and_they_will_stumble by_sword and_by_flame by_captivity and_by_plunder days.
OET (OET-RV) Those among the people and have insight will teach others, But they’ll be killed in battle or burnt during the attacks, or be plundered for several days or taken captive.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
This paragraph tells what will happen to those who resist the evil king of the North.
Those with insight will instruct many,
¶ “Those who are wise among God’s people will help many others know what to do.
¶ “Those who have insight will guide many people to understand the right thing to do.
Those with insight will instruct many: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as Those with insight is more literally “those who are wise/discerning among/of the people” or “those of the people who have insight.” In this context the phrase refers to the “wise” among the Jews, that is, their leaders. The word many here refers to the ordinary Jewish people. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
Wise leaders will instruct many of the people. (CEV)
Those who are wise among the people will teach the masses. (NET)
Those of the people who are wise leaders will instruct many (NJB)
though for a time they will fall by sword or flame, or be captured or plundered.
However, some of them will be killed in war or burned to death. Others will be taken/made prisoners or lose their possessions. This will/must last for a short period of time.
But for a time they will suffer. The enemy/enemies will kill some of them with swords or with fire. They will rob others of their possessions and take some of them captive.
though for a time they will fall by sword or flame, or be captured or plundered: In the English the pronoun they is ambiguous here. It could refer to “Those with insight” or to the “many” whom they will instruct. In view of 11:35a, it probably refers to those who have insight, that is, the wise. Here are some other ways to translate this:
But for a while, some of these leaders will either be killed with swords or burned alive, or else robbed of their possessions and thrown into prison. (CEV)
for some days, however, they shall fall by sword and flame, and suffer captivity and plunder (NRSV)
But for some time they will be defeated by swords and flames. They will be captured and looted. (GW)
but these leaders will die by fire and sword, or they will be jailed and robbed (NLT)
