He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt,

He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as He will gain control of is literally “he will rule.” Use a verb that is appropriate for controlling wealth and previous objects. Here are some other ways to translate this:

He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the riches of Egypt (NRSV)

he will seize control of her hidden stores of gold and silver and of all her treasures (REB)

he will have control over the hidden stores of gold and silver, as well as all the treasures of Egypt (NET)

He will take away Egypt’s hidden treasures of gold and silver and its other prized possession. (GNT)

11:43b

and the Libyans and Cushites will also submit to him.

and the Libyans and Cushites will also submit to him: The people called the Cushites came from the land that is now known as Ethiopia. These people, and the people of Libya, would submit to the evil king.

The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as will…submit to him is literally “in his footsteps.” This idiom here indicates that the Libyans and Cushites/Ethiopians would walk behind the king, conquered and humbled.

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
