This paragraph continues to describe the conflict between the northern and the southern kingdoms.

11:9a

who will invade the realm of the king of the South

who will invade the realm of the king of the South: The Hebrew verb that the BSB has translated as invade is more literally “he will go.” It is good to make the subject explicit. Here are some other ways to translate this:

Next, the king of the North will attack the king of the South (NCV)

Then the king of the north will advance against the empire of the king of the south (NET)

11:9b

and then return to his own land.

and then return to his own land: This verse part indicates that the king of the North would not remain inside the territory of the king of the South. He would go back home. It is implied that he was unsuccessful in his attack. Here are some other ways to translate this:

but will withdraw to his own land (NET)

but he will be beaten back to his own country (NCV)

but he will be forced back to his own country (CEV)
