OET (OET-LV)To_time he_will_return and_he_will_come in_south and_not it_will_be as_time and_as_time.

OET (OET-RV)At the appointed time the northern (Syrian) king will come back into the south, but he won’t be successful like he had been the previous time.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:29–30

This paragraph tells how some ships from the west would prevent the evil king of the North from invading Egypt again. Scholars agree that this is a reference to Roman intervention.

11:29a

At the appointed time he will invade the South again,

At the appointed time: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as At the appointed time refers to the time that God had chosen or appointed. Other ways to translate this include:

In God’s time

At the time God has decided (CEV)

At the right time (NCV)

At the time God chooses

he will invade the South again: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as he will invade is literally “he will return and he will come into.” The northern king will again march with his army toward the southern kingdom, Egypt. It is good to make it explicit, as the BSB has done, that he will go toward the South in order to attack it. It may also be helpful to make it explicit that the pronoun he here refers to the king of the North. For example:

the king of the north will invade the southern kingdom again (CEV)

the king of the North will attack the king of the South again (NCV)

11:29b

but this time will not be like the first.

but this time will not be like the first: This is more literally “and this latter time it shall not be like the former time.” This indicates that this second attack on Egypt would turn out differently than the first. Here are some other ways to translate this:

but this time things will turn out differently (GNT)

but he will have less success than he had before (REB)

but this time the result will be different (NLT)

this time: The phrase this time refers to the invasion of Egypt mentioned in 11:29a. This second invasion took place in 168 B.C.

the first: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as the first refers to the first invasion of Egypt that is described in 11:25–28, Antiochus’ Egyptian campaign of 169 B.C. This first campaign had ended with the defeat of Egypt.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
