In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:25–28

This paragraph describes the continued struggle of the despicable king of the North against the king of the South, the king of Egypt.

11:27a

And the two kings, with their hearts bent on evil,

And the two kings, with their hearts bent on evil: This verse part describes how the kings of the North and South would think of each other. They would each plan to do harm to the other. Here are some other ways to translate this:

And as for the two kings, their hearts shall be bent on doing evil. (ESV)

These two kings, their minds filled with evil intentions (NET)

The two kings will both plan to do evil. (GW)

with their hearts bent on evil: The Hebrew text that the BSB translates with the English idiom with their hearts bent on evil is literally “their heart to evil.” This word for evil refers to evil deeds. The two kings would both be planning on doing evil to the other.

11:27b

will speak lies at the same table,

will speak lies at the same table: This verse part describes how the kings of the North and South would act to each other. They would meet in a friendly way, but they would both tell lies. Here are some other ways to translate this:

will trade lies with one another at the same table. (NET)

They will sit at the same table and tell lies. (GW)

at the same table: The phrase at the same table refers to sharing a meal together. This implies that the kings would pretend to be friendly. They would eat and drink together, but they would both be telling lies and planning evil. However, in some cultures people do not sit at a table together to eat. In those languages it may be natural to say:

meet around a table (CEV)

sit and eat together

share a meal together

11:27c

but to no avail,

11:27d

for still the end will come at the appointed time.

11:27c-d

but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time: The common Hebrew conjunction that the BSB translates as but here introduces a contrast with the actions and plans of the kings in the previous verse part.

In some languages it may be natural to begin a new sentence here. For example:

But it will not succeed, for there is still an end at the appointed time. (NET)

But they will not succeed, because the end must wait until the appointed time. (GW)

but to no avail: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as but to no avail is more literally “and not it will succeed.” Here is another way to translate this:

But it will make no difference (NLT)

for still the end will come at the appointed time: This is a reference to Habakkuk 2:3. Here the meaning is probably that God decides on the way things will end. It may be natural to make this explicit. Here are some other ways to translate this:

God appoints the time for it to end

God is the one who has set the time for their end (UBS Handbook)

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
